East Steel City Bowl champs (Hamilton)


The offences had their moments, but the defences ended up making the difference at the 20th annual Steel City Bowl high school football all-star game last night at Ivor Wynne stadium.

The East team scored two touchdowns and that was was enough as their defence was stingy when it had to be, especially in the final minute as the East hung on to score a 14-9 win.

The game, which has been played annually since 1991, is designed to showcase Hamilton’s high school football talent to university scouts and coaches from both sides of the border.

Individual award winners included: offensive line – Andrew Howlett, St. Mary’s, Jozef Jerman, Cardinal Newman. Running back – Tyson Vanzie, Highland, Ryan Silvestri, Cardinal Newman. Receiver – Mark Rutledge, MacNab, Kyle Ritchie, Cathedral. Defensive Line – Peter Rajacic, Westdale, Adam Valchuk, Cardinal Newman. Linebacker – Michael Smith, MacNab, Kyle Budzey, Sherwood. Defensive back – Donovan Saunders, Delta, Tyler Gorland, Westdale. MVPs – Chuck Wall, MacNab, Denzel Rocha, Cathedral.

The Eastern team was composed of players from Cathedral, Delta, Bishop Ryan, Cardinal Newman, Sir Winston Churchill, Glendale, Saltfleet, Orchard Park, Sherwood, Barton and St. Jean de Brebeuf.

The Western team was made up of players from St. Thomas More, Westdale, Hill Park, Sir, John A. Macdonald, Ancaster, Waterdown, Bishop Tonnos, St. Mary, Parkside, and Highland.
