Edmonton Midget 2012 Season week one Review

March 30th 2012
Edmonton midget football kicked off their season at the 2012 Jamboree, some of the outstanding talent the teams have this year is shining through especially the Leduc Ti-cats, the Battle river shock, The Parkland Predaters and the St Albert storm. These teams did amazing at the jamboree.

Two teams that did not attend the Jamboree were the Edmonton Eagles and the Sherwood park wolverines, these two remarkable teams made the tough decision to join together and become one, keeping the name “Wolverines” The team had there first joint practise on tuesday, and they are looking stronger then ever, “so much talent” these young kids have, it really is incredible to watch. Of course like anything that you have to share, there are problems that rise, but the two teams have been working together to do the one thing that both teams believe in. Letting the kids do what they love, play football.

The Wolverines kicked off there season against the Edmonton Seahawks, on April 14th, the game was very close but in the end, the seahawks pulled through defeating the wolves 12-6, still it was a great season starter and you could see the talent these kids are bringing.

The Leduc Ti-cats also played on the 14th, against the Edmonton Chargers, The game was a messy one due to the snow conditions. The lines were very difficult to see and the ball popped out lots by both teams. Final score was Leduc Ticats 14, Edmonton Chargers 12. Due to the conditions the teams did the best they could, neither team had an MVP.

It was a cold start season start for the Lloydminster Red Dogs as they headed to Edmonton to play host to the Battle River Shock. The snow and cold weather did play into the results, but it was still a close game up until the late stages of the fourth quarter. That’s when a few mistakes allowed the Shock to take the 18–9 victory over the Red Dogs. β€œOur defence played really well. We held them to two touchdowns,” said Rod Kirby. Head coach of the Red dogs, β€œWe moved the ball well on offence but we just got bogged down at times. When we needed a first down we just couldn’t get it, so their defence was spectacular as well The Red Dogs will now head back to Edmonton to take on the Sherwood Park Wolverines on Friday, the wolves have always been tough. I don’t think we’ve beaten them yet. We played them three times and they beat us all three times so we’re going to have a tough test,” said Kirby. β€œThey’re going to be physical and they execute well, but if we play like we did last Friday we should be fine.”

Season opener for the St Albert Storm was a tough one to swallow as the Parkland Predators shocked the team with eight touchdowns on sunday. In the 56-7 victory Parkland whipped up six scoring plays to lead by 35 at halftime at Clarke Park. Parkland rolled up 23 first downs and 219 rushing yards on 22 carries against a leaky Storm defence. Three quarterbacks combined for 13 completions on 17 attempts for 199 yards. We could’ve played a lot better than we played today,” said Keith Zyla, a Grade 10 quarterback/safety for the Storm. The next Storm game is Thursday against the Millwoods Grizzles. Kickoff is 8:30 p.m. at Johnny Bright Park.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
