For Kirkland Lawrence, it was his friends that originally sparked his interest in the sport of football. After seeing some of them tryout for their local peewee team, the Medicine Hat Ti-Cats, he decided to give it a shot, and has been hooked ever since.

Now, the offensive lineman has six years of football experience under his belt. After two years with the Ti-Cats, he moved up to high school and the McCoy Coltsā€™ junior varsity team, then to their senior squad.

ā€œI have enjoyed the coaches and my teammates and just playing football,ā€ Kirkland says of the experience of playing for the Colts.

When he isnā€™t playing football, Kirkland enjoys working out and spending times with his friends. Those friends have remained some of his biggest influences both on and off the field, alongside his parents and coaches.

ā€œMy parents have been there since the start,ā€ he says. ā€œThey have always encouraged me to do my best.ā€

Kirkland still has two years of football to go, and he hasnā€™t yet put much thought into his post-secondary football career yet.

ā€œI haven’t really done much research in what university I would like to go to,ā€ he says. ā€œI would have to look at what the academic programs are and go from there.ā€

Kirkland wants to study power engineering in university. ā€œI have looked into the program and it seems like something I would enjoy doing,ā€ he says.

For now, Kirkland is focusing on his last two years as a Colt, particularly on improving his skill so he can get into a top university or college team after he graduates.
