Eskimos often find diamonds in rough in local tryout camp: Sharun hopes to become latest success story

Calvin McCarty, Chris Ciezki, Greg Whelan, Taylor Inglis and J.R. LaRose are a handful of examples of the talent the Edmonton Eskimos local open tryout has managed to flush out over the last few years.

All five can easily be considered diamonds in the rough for the Canadian Football League team, although LaRose’s career was cut short by injury.

Among them will be Corbin Sharun, a former quarterback with the Strathcona Lords and St. Francis Xavier University X-Men, who now toils as a safety with the Edmonton Wildcats junior team. Sharun is a possible selection in next weekend’s Canadian college draft or a potential free-agent signing somewhere in the CFL.

The 21-year-old Sharun, who has one more year of junior eligibility and three more of CIS play if he chooses to go back to that route, stands in at an even six-feet and weighs 210 pounds. He’s in his third year of sociology at the University of Alberta since transferring from St. FX.

The Leduc native won three city high school championships at Scona from 2003-05, flipping back and forth from quarterback to safety his first two seasons and playing both positions in his senior year. He was invited to Duane Forde’s combine in Toronto on March 12, the day prior to the official two-day CFL evaluation camp, which he didn’t attend.

McCarty’s opportunity came at the open tryout, which also opened the Eskimos’ eyes. Edmonton selected him 27th overall.
