Essex wins 3rd OVFL title over panthers


The Essex Ravens beat the Cumberland Panthers 39-32 in triple overtime to win the Ontario Varsity Football League championship Saturday at Minto Field in Ottawa.

Receiver Dylan Whitfield scored three touchdowns and caught a two-point conversion, quarterback Austin Kennedy ran for two TDs and Matt Paonessa had a field goal and five extra-point conversions for the Ravens.

For Cumberland, Ashton Dickson scored 2 TDs in regulation time and 1 in overtime, Ryan Begin had 1 field goal of 26 yards.

Essex tied the game with 1:49 left in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard pass and a two-point conversion from Kennedy to Whitfield.

In overtime, each team had the ball from the 30-yard line and each had 3 possessions.

They traded touchdowns in the first two overtime possessions.

In the third OT, Kennedy scored on a four-yard run to give essex the victory.
