Sherwood Parkās Brad Launhardt has led his various teams at quarterback ever since he started football at eight years old. He played three years of atom with the Sherwood Park Broncos, then two years each of peewee and bantam with the Bulldogs and the Wolverines. In Bradās second year of Peewee, the Bulldogs took home the Tier 1 city championship.
āThe Tier 1 was just with a great group of guys and we had lots of fun that year,ā Brad recalls.
Brad won the teamās Leadership Award in his second and final year of bantam with the Wolverines, then started football at the high school level with the Bev Facey Falcons, where he played on the senior team all three years. In Grade 11, he was named the schoolās Athlete of the Year, and the team won the Metro Championship.
āWe were down two scores late in the game and offensively we had some big plays and took the lead,ā Brad says. āJust overcoming a deficit like that is exciting and then to win a championship at such a high level is a great feeling.ā
Brad rounded out his high school career by sharing an offensive back award with the teamās running back and putting up the second highest passing yardage total in the school. He is grateful to his head coach, Curt Martin, for his continued support over the years they have worked together.
āHe’s coached me since I was eight so we’ve developed a close relationship, especially in high school when he became the offensive coordinator and we needed to be on the same page on the field,ā Brad says. āBut it also made it easier for me to approach him about off-field stuff for advice and such.
“He’s also just someone to look up to as he is a teacher and head coach, so someone similar to what I want to be like.ā
Brad enjoys several other sports including basketball, handball and track, but his focus will be on football as he continues at the post-secondary level in the fall with the University of Alberta Golden Bears.
āThe fact that it’s close to home and the coaching changes really excite me,ā he says. āThey have a great new culture coming in there, and I want to be part of the rebuilding process.ā
Alongside playing for the Bears, Brad will also be working toward a combined degree in education and physical education.Ā He is planning on becoming a coach and a teacher – preferably both – after his own football career, but for now, Brad has his years as Golden Bear to look forward to.
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
