Mississauga kicker newest recruit to join OUA team’s 2014 class.
Following in family footsteps is exactly what an Ontario standout has chosen to do for the next stage of his gridiron career.
Gabriel Ferraro is the newest Guelph Gryphon.Β This past weekend, the 5β11, 160 pound kicker/punter from Mississauga, Ontario signed the Gryphons for the 2014 OUA season.
He will be the second Ferraro to be in a Gryphons uniform.Β His older brother Daniel, who is also a kicker/punter, recently completed his third year with the team.
While there were several reasons he decided on the Guelph, Ontario campus, Ferraro is looking forward to playing with his older brother as well as being instructed by Gryphons Kicking Coach Hank Ilesic.
βAt Guelph I get that “home” feeling. Having my brother at Guelph, I have been around the program for the past three years and have seen the great support from the coaches and the team, both on and off the field,β commented Ferraro after his decision.Β βAnother factor for me is the team’s family atmosphere.β
βThe opportunity to play alongside my brother, who has been my mentor and role model my whole life, is an experience I couldn’t pass on. I’m most excited about that and the opportunity to work with Hank Ilesic.β
Ferraro joins the Gryphons after finishing his high school career with the St. Marcellinus Spirit of the Region of Peel Secondary Schools Athletic Association (ROPSSAA) and a stint with the Burlington Stampeders of the Ontario Football Conference (OFC). In 2013, the Ontario kicker booted 25 field goals successfully in 28 attempts and averaged 41 yards per punt.Β Ferraro also represented his province as a member of Team Ontario West at the 2012 Football Canada Cup in London, Ontario.
Recently, Ferraro was selected to Football Canadaβs Junior National Team roster that will play against Team USAβs under-19 national team during the 2014 International Bowl Series in Arlington, Texas on February 7th and 8th, 2013.
