Fifth-year receiver Steven Hughes out for Ottawa v. Queens game and beyond

After a dominant 35-8 road victory against the Guelph Gryphons to start the 2011 season, the Gee-Gees return home to Frank Clair Stadium this Saturday, September 10 at 1:00 p.m. to take on the Queen’s Gaels. Last year, Ottawa won a 27-25 overtime thriller against Queen’s in Kingston.

Gee-Gees fourth-year quarterback Aaron Colbon, Ottawa, Ont., completed 23 of 32passes for 298 yards and two touchdowns in his successful debut as a CIS starting pivot, against Guelph.

“It was no surprise. That’s what we expected from him,” said Gee-Gees head coach Jean-Philippe Asselin. “He’s a calm quarterback who makes the right decisions and he performed like he can.”

Colbon and uOttawa’s high-octane offence will look to continue their early-season success against Queen’s. On the other side of the ball, the Gee-Gees defence is ready to make life difficult for Queen’s quarterback, Billy McPhee, who is also beginning his first year as a CIS starting QB. Queen’s lost their first OUA game of the season to McMaster, 26-2.
“We’re going to play our defence and we’ll make them adjust to what we do,” said Asselin.

Fifth-year receiver Steven Hughes, Ottawa, Ont., was injured last game and is out indefinitely. In his absence, third-year receiver Simon Le Marquand, Gatineau, Qué., and fourth-year receiver Bogdan Raic, Kanata, Ont., are expected to step up their game.

“Those players would have been starters for a couple of years now on many teams in the CIS. I am happy for them to have an opportunity to show what they can do,” said Asselin.

Over 6,200 fans were in attendance at Frank Clair Stadium in last year’s Gee-Gees home opener against Western and the

Gee-Gees are once again expecting a large crowd for this season’s home opener against Queen’s.

“It’s a big advantage when fans are loud when the other team is on offence. It makes it very difficult for them to communicate,” said Asselin.
