Calgary linebacker Jakub Jakoubek has been raking in the accolades ever since his football career began in 2007. As a bantam for the Calgary Cowboys, he was named Rookie of the Year in his first season, followed by Most Inspirational Player (2008) and Most Valuable Player (2009).

He also earned recognition from the CBFA for his efforts with the Cowboys, twice landing a spot on the Calgary Selects team. In his final season as a Bantam, Jakub was Team Northā€™s Defensive MVP in the All-Star game, and was also named Linebacker of the Year.

He then moved on to the Cowboysā€™ midget team, where he would stay for three seasons and another handful of MVP and All-Star titles.

The summer after his rookie midget season, Jakub helped Team Calgary bring home the gold medal in the 2010 Alberta Summer Games. The tournament was an especially intense experience.

ā€œSpending a weekend with just your teammates, playing more than a few punishing games, losing friends to injuries, and coming out on top to win all in just a couple of days,ā€ he recalls.

The following autumn, Jakub started high school and suited up for the Bowness Trojans. The best part, he says, was being to play alongside a group of his close friends who cared about the game as much as he did.

Jakub was the Team MVP in all three of years with the Trojans. When he graduated high school, he chose to head for the CJFL and the Calgary Colts.

ā€œThe team is great,ā€ Jakub says. ā€œEveryone is really dedicated and works hard in practice.

“The coaches and some of the veteran linebackers have really helped me get used to the system and adjust to the tempo.ā€

Alongside playing for the Colts, Jakub is also taking courses at Mount Royal University in Calgary. He is not yet sure what he wants to major in, but his plan is to spend one more year with the Colts before transferring to a university with a CIS football team. However, where exactly that path will take him is still unclear.

ā€œI haven’t really given it any real consideration,ā€ Jakub says. ā€œI’m just focused on the upcoming season right now.ā€
