Football a family affair for DL Jarrett

Sisler Spartan’s, Matthew Jarrett, has been on the gridiron forĀ a brief period of time, but has made an impact in the trenches. Matthew started playing football because his whole family has played. ā€œI love how aggressive you can be while playing,ā€ said Matthew.

Matthew Jarrett joined his first football team in grade 9, the Sisler Spartans (Winnipeg High School Football League). In 2014, Matthew won the coachā€™s award and was named to the WHSFLā€™s all-conference team while playing in junior varsity. This past season, Matthew and the Spartans ended up 1-6 on the year.

The young Spartan has modeled his game after the NFLā€™s Vince Wilfork of the Houston Texans.

Matthew is considering going to the University of Manitoba. He wants to pursue a degree in criminal justice so he can become a police officer. Matthew has also visited the University of Minnesota Crookston.

When asked how he thinks he will handle the next level, Matthew answered, ā€œI will be able to adjust to the next level pretty good because of the effort I will put forth.ā€ This off-season, Matthew will be looking to improve his footwork and strength.Ā For his workouts, Matthew weight lifts with his team after school. His coach, Mitchell Harrison, has designed a program for Matthew to better himself for the next season.

In everyday life, Matthew looks up to his Mom because she pushes him to be the best he can be. In football, Matthewā€™s older brother, who plays for the Winnipeg Rifles (Canadian Junior Football League), is his mentor. ā€œHe makes me want to play at the highest level I can play,ā€ added Matthew. Matthew also gave thanks to all his teammates and coaches because they gave him the opportunities to be the player he is today.

Football has been great to Matthew because heā€™s been able to show people that he can play multiple sports. He explained, ā€œIā€™ve always played basketball but when I came to Sisler football gave me another chance at showing me what other sports I was capable of.ā€Ā Without the game of football, Matthew would still be playing basketball, or nothing.

Football has taught Matthew that itā€™s good to never give up in life, and he uses the same lessons in life to get what he wants. Matthew has learnt this from his coach, Mr. Degrave.
