Football BC: Games to keep an eye on this weekend (Oct. 22-24)

The final week of regular season action for leagues playing 9-man BC Community Football, plus the final home game of the season for the UBC Thunderbirds, highlight this weekend’s games to watch in local football action.

Vancouver Mainland Football League

One team in the VMFL’s Junior Bantam division has separated themselves from the pack and that is the Coquitlam Raiders (7-0), who knocked off the South Delta Rams by a score of 21-14 last week to remain the lone unbeaten team in the division.
The Raiders will put their put their perfect season on the line this Sunday, October 24 when they host the Langley Wranglers (2-4) at Kevin Chin Field at Mackin Park. Kickoff is 1:30 pm.

Valley Community Football League

This week’s game of the week from the VCFL comes from the Bantam Division and the features Mission-Abby Falcon-Niners (3-2-1) visiting Townsend Park for a showdown with Chilliwack Giants (4-2) on Saturday, October 23. Both teams still have aspirations for a first place finish but will need a victory to keep those hopes alive. Kickoff is at 4:15 pm.
The other game to watch also takes place at Townsend Park on Saturday, October 23 and comes from the Midget Division where the Chilliwack Giants (2-3-1) will host the undefeated Coquitlam Falcons (6-0). The Giants are the defending provincial champions but they need a victory in order to keep their playoff hopes for this season alive. Game time is 6:15 pm.

Southern Interior Football Conference League

Rugby Park in Kamloops is the host of a triple-header of action this Sunday, October 24 beginning at 10:00 am with a Pee Wee division clash between the Penticton Cougars (0-7) and the Kamloops Wildcats (2-4-1).
At noon, Junior Bantam action takes to the field as the Kamloops Wildcats (0-7) host the West Kelowna Sundevils (2-4). The day of action closes out with another Junior Bantam tilt between the Kamloops Broncos (3-3) and the Vernon Marauders (4-2).

Vancouver Island Football League (Pee Wee)

It’s the final week of the regular season for the VIFL Pee Wee division. This weekend action features Cowichan against the Victoria Hitmen (12:00 pm at Copley) and the Victoria Outlaws facing Nanaimo (3:00 pm at Pioneer). Both games will take place on Sunday, October 24.

Northern Minor Football

The final weekend of regular season action takes place this Saturday, October 23 with Lakewood the site of four games.
Playoffs will open on Wednesday, October 27 with the Pee Wee Semi-Final while the Jr. Bantam Semi-Final will go on Thursday, October 28. BC High School Football

The BC High School Football game of the week takes place at McLeod Stadium in Langley when the Langley Saints (1-3) host the undefeated Windsor Dukes (4-0) on Friday, October 22. Kickoff is 5:30 pm.

BC Junior Football

The Vancouver Islanders Raiders are on top of the BCFC for the fifth consecutive season following a 16-14 win last Sunday in the Cullen Cup championship over the Okanagan Sun. Now they’ll turn their attention to earning a berth to the CJFL championship and getting an opportunity to defend their national title.
The Raiders will now have a week to rest up and prepare for the CJFL Intergold game versus the champion of the Ontario Football Conference, which will either be the Ottawa Sooners or Hamilton Hurricanes.
The game will be hosted by the Raiders at Caledonia Park in Nanaimo, BC on Saturday, October 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm. Visit www.viraiders.ca for more information.

University Football

A last-second touchdown by running back Perry Harder kept the playoff hopes alive for the UBC Thunderbirds (2-4) as they defeated the Alberta Golden Bears 32-28 last Saturday. The T-Birds will need to come up with another big effort when they play host to the Saskatchewan Huskies (5-1) this Friday, October 22 in their final home game of the season at Thunderbird Stadium. Kickoff is 7:00 pm. The T-Birds scored a surprise 31-12 victory in week two over the Huskies.

The SFU Clan look to build off their first win of the season two weeks ago over the UBC Thunderbirds at Shrum Bowl XXXIII by picking up their first victory over an NCAA opponent this week. The Clansmen are in St. George, Utah on Saturday, October 23 facing Dixie State. Game time is 6:00 pm.
