Football Manitoba hires John Makie as its new Technical Director


Football Manitoba is pleased to announce the hiring of John Makie as its new Technical Director. Makie comes to Football Manitoba from the Louis Riel School Division where he has served as an Educational Assistant for the past two years. John, originally from Saskatchewan, joined the Manitoba football scene in 2005 as starting Quarterback for the University of Manitoba Bisons, where he continued to play until 2008.

As a player, Makie holds many passing records in the CJFL from his tenure with the Regina Thunder and Vancouver Trojans, including the record of Most Yards in a Career with 9370. During his time with the Bisons, John was part of the 2007 Vanier Cup Championship team, where he won the Bruce Coulter award which is given to the most outstanding offensive player. Through his playing career he has also received the Order of the Buffalo Hunt from the Province of Manitoba,
and was awarded the City of Winnipeg’s Outstanding Achievement Award from His Worship, Mayor Sam Katz.

Now a coach, Makie is a fully certified Level Two NCCP, and has been the Quarterback coach for the University of Manitoba Bisons for the past two seasons. He also has served as the Quarterback coach for U16 Team West, who won the first annual Red River Cup in 2010. John has become a regular fixture in the Football Manitoba community over the past few years, guest coaching and
volunteering his time with University of Manitoba Bisons Football Identification Camps, Elite High Performance Centers Skills & Drills Camp, University of Manitoba Mini U Camps, Provincial Team Identification Camps, and Elite High Performance Centers Prospect Camp & Combine. John has also taken the time to develop and mentor young up and coming quarterbacks within the football
community. Aside from football, he has also coached the J.H. Bruns Collegiate Girls Basketball team for the past two seasons, where he is responsible for teaching the basic fundamentals, systems and strategies to Grade 9 athletes.

John’s main responsibilities will be to coordinate, plan, administer, and effectively implement the activities associated with coaching development, referees development, grassroots development and high performance programs.

Makie will kick off his tenure with Football Manitoba by presenting at the 2011 Super Clinic, where he will focus on Quarterback Fundamentals and Development.
