Former Dinos ready for CFL season

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos have plenty of reasons to pay attention when the 2012 Canadian Football League season opens Friday night.

The four-time defending Canada West champs are represented by 11 former players on CFL rosters, a big part of the 145 total players who have graduated from Canadian Interuniversity Sport. Of those 145, 47 represent Canada West, and the Dinos’ 11 is second only to Saskatchewan (12) among all CIS schools.

The list includes four players from last season’s Canada West championship team, including two-time conference defensive MVP Sam Hurl who cracked the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ lineup. Running back Anthony Woodson is now a Winnipeg Blue Bomber, while the Dinos’ all-time leading rusher Matt Walter along with all-star linebacker Jordan Verdone landed on the practice rosters in Calgary and B.C., respectively.

The Calgary Stampeders have more Dinos than any other CFL team, with Walter joining receiver Anthony Parker and offensive lineman Mark Dewit at McMahon Stadium. Hurl joins former teammate Alex Krausnick-Groh, who suits up for a second season along the offensive line in Regina, while offensive lineman Dylan Steenbergen and wide receiver Nathan Coehoorn fly the Dinos flag in enemy territory with the Edmonton Eskimos.

Woodson is reunited with offensive lineman Paul Swiston in Winnipeg. Former Stampeder Tim O’Neill landed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the off-season, while Verdone is the lone Dinos representative with the B.C. Lions.

Two of the Dinos’ 2012 CFL draft picks, offensive linemen Kirby Fabien and Carson Rockhill, are expected to rejoin the Dinos in the fall.

The Dinos open the 2012 season and their drive for an unprecedented fifth straight conference title on Saturday, Nov. 1 as they host the Regina Rams at McMahon Stadium. The season culminates with the 48thΒ Vanier Cup at Rogers Centre in Toronto.
