Former Mount A head coach Steve Lalonde to lead Cougars

The St Leonard Cougars will have a new head coach for the 2011 season.

Steve LaLonde, a graduate of Bishop’s University, Lennoxville, Quebec has agreed to
take the position.

Steve is a former head coach with the CIS Mount Allison Mounties from 2005 –
2008.

From Mount Allison info:

LaLonde has a Master of Education degree from American Intercontinental University in Illinois, and an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Bishop’s University, in Lennoxville, PQ. While at Bishop’s he was a five-year starting wide receiver with the Gaiters. He was a league all-star, the university’s Rookie of the Year, and a conference finalist for the same honour. He was drafted by the Montreal Concordes in the CFL, but was later released and returned to Bishop’s, becoming an all-conference selection for the second time in his five-year career.

He has extensive and diverse backgrounds in many areas as a player, coach, educator, fitness advisor, and business owner.

As a player since the late β€˜80s, LaLonde was associated with three CFL teams (Montreal Concordes, Edmonton Eskimos, Ottawa Roughriders), several semi-pro and arena football teams (Dayton Skyhawks, Albany Firebirds, Miami Hooters, Montreal Voyageurs), and one NFL team (Miami Dolphins).

While his own playing experiences were limited during some seasons because of injuries, LaLonde has played an important part in the success and development of many young athletes. He most recently coached at two high school programs and for two professional organizations before coming to Sackville.

Known for turning programs around, Mr. LaLonde, as offensive co-ordinator at Lafayette High School in Buffalo, led his team to the playoffs for the first time in a decade. And at Nichols Prep School, also in Buffalo, he developed an exciting offensive strategy that produced the region’s number-one offensive team, breaking school and league records over a two-year period. In the 1992-93 season, he was the head coach of the J.S. Woodsworth High School team in Ottawa, ON.

In the pro ranks, LaLonde was offensive co-ordinator and quarterback coach for the Erie Invaders of the Indoor Professional Football League, a team that averaged over 50 points a game during the season. He also served in the same capacity with the semi-professional Buffalo Gladiators who averaged over 400 yards of offence every game, making it to the national semi-finals.

The complete coaching staff will be announced at a later date.
