Fox 40 Prospect Challenge (Central): WR Burton about to go from Sooner to Golden Gael

Richard Burton first started playing football five years ago and his experience has been nothing but positive.

“I fell in love with the game and I have been lucky to have been on some really good football teams with some amazing coaches and teammates to make the experience that much better,” said the wide receiver.

Throughout his career, he has played with the Bel-Air Lions and in the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) with the Myers Riders.

During the nine game 2016 varsity season, the Rider accumulated 702 yards and four touchdowns.

Richard will be joining the Ottawa Sooners in the Ontario Provincial Football League (OPFL) this summer.

The future Sooner was supposed to be a part of this year’s Fox 40 Prospect Challenge, but has decided not to participate since his commitment to Queens University.

During the offseason, the recently signed Golden Gael always has the goal to keep getting better.

“I do that by being in the gym, working to get stronger and faster and then being on the field, working to improve routes and being a student of the game,” commented Richard.

On the field, his role model is Steve Smith Sr. because he was a smaller guy, but his competitiveness and sheer determination allowed him to become one of the best wide receivers to play the game.

“Not to mention, he gives some of the nastiest stiff arms I have ever seen,” added Richard.

The Golden Gael loves football because it is such a team game and everyone has to be working in synergy for a team to be successful more so than any other sport.

“I also just love the competitiveness and intensity that comes with a football game,” continued Richard, “it is a rush like no other.”
