FPC18 Varsity Update: Catching up with CFC100 Erik Johnson

There’s fast, then there’s really fast, and CFC100 Erik Johnson out of St. Michael’s College falls into the latter category. We caught up with Johnson to talk about his memories growing up around the game, following up Blues’ OFSAA victory next season, and how he’s been enjoying the FPC Showcase.

Johnson on his earliest football memories…

My earliest memory on the field was when I was playing for the Metro Toronto Wildcats and it was my first time putting on pads. I remember my first tackling drill and how it was nothing like on TV. I fell in love with the game when I was a kid watching my dad on TV (Retired Referee and former CFL V.P of Football Glen Johnson). My first word was touchdown and I’ve loved football ever since.

Johnson on the evolution of his game since grade nine

Since grade 9 I have done many things to improve both on and off the field. I’ve been attending many camps and played FPC since I was an underclassman. I also train outside of football with my track team and baseball team to improve my overall athleticism. Off the field I also work hard in the classroom. Having maintained an above 80 average since grade 7.

Johnson on being named to the CFC100 and what he thinks sets him apart…

One of the biggest things I bring to the table as a receiver is my speed and quickness. These help me get open and create separation downfield and also as a returner. Being named to the CFC100 was truly an honour. I was so excited when I found out I was selected I called my dad right away to tell him.

Johnson on his goals at St. Michael’s College next season …

My goal for this season is to continue to get better individually. Hopefully be selected as a captain by my teammates and help lead our team to a consecutive OFSAA bowl title.

Johnson on his experience with the FPC coaching staff…

The FPC coaching staff has been a great help in improving my game. Since they don’t have alot of time with us they try to share as much as they can so we can be the best that we can be come game time. Working alongside some of the best in Ontario has taught me that every little thing counts and every single rep counts. If you let up for a split second someone will take advantage of it. This has helped me a lot especially when it comes to route running.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
