FRC – CIS football players of the week (#4): Charbonneau-Campeau, Caron, Taylor honoured

OTTAWA (CIS) – Sherbrooke wide receiver Simon Charbonneau-Campeau, Concordia linebacker Max Caron and Saint Mary’s punt returner Jahmeek Taylor are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport football players of the week for the period ending Sept. 25, 2011.
The selection was made by a committee comprised of members of Football Reporters of Canada (FRC).

Charbonneau-Campeau, a fourth-year engineering student from Saint-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Que., was honoured on offence after he caught 10 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns in a 33-26 road victory over Concordia last Friday, including the game-winning major with 28 seconds remaining in regulation. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound wideout caught a 22-yard TD pass from freshman Jérémi Doyon-Roch with 4:17 left in the game to make it 25-20 Sherbrooke and, after the Stingers came back to take a 26-25 lead, scored the game-winner from three yards out in the final minute. Charbonneau-Campeau, who was the Quebec nominee for the Hec Crighton Trophy a year ago and is considered the eighth best prospect for the 2012 CFL Draft, currently leads CIS in receptions (33), receiving yards (561) and touchdown catches (7), all of it in only four outings.

Saint Mary’s running back Melvin Abankwah, Wilfrid Laurier receiver Dillon Heap and UBC quarterback Billy Greene were also up for the award.

Caron, a second-year political science student from Kingston, Ont., took home the weekly honour on defence thanks to a career day against No. 5-ranked Sherbrooke. Despite the 33-26 loss, the 6-foot-2, 209-pound sophomore put up remarkable numbers finishing with 14.5 tackles, including 13 solo and one for a loss, and returning an interception on 64 yards for a score that put the Stingers in front 20-19 midway through the fourth quarter. Caron, whose 14.5 tackles in a single game rank fourth in Quebec conference history, leads CIS this fall with 43 tackles in four contests.

Saint Mary’s lineman Rob Jubenville, Ottawa linebacker Tyler Sawyer and Calgary lineman Linden Gaydosh were also nominated.

Taylor, a fourth-year arts student from Mississauga, Ont., was the choice on special teams thanks his 94 yards on two punt returns, including a spectacular 80-yard touchdown, in a 60-6 domination of Mount Allison. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound receiver, who opened the scoring six minutes into the game on a five-yard TD run, found the end zone again early in the third frame as the No. 7 Huskies (2-1) beat the Mounties for the second time in three weeks. Taylor, the reigning AUS player of the year, currently tops the Atlantic conference in punt return yards (222) and punt return average (16.8 yards).

Kickers Pierre-Paul Gélinas of Montreal and Matthew Falvo of Ottawa were also up for the distinction, along with Alberta kick returner Dillon Prince.

The Football Reporters of Canada – University Division represents journalists and broadcasters in every region of the country covering CIS Football. Since 1958 the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) have been an organization of media members who have covered the Canadian Football League, serving to select the league’s outstanding players, coach-of-the-year and all-star teams through voting conducted by its members. In 2009, the FRC amalgamated with the University Football Reporters of Canada (UFRC) to give the organization greater scope in its affiliation with amateur and college football.
