FRC – CIS football players of the week (#7): Marshall, Rideout, Campbell honoured

Marshall, a third-year social sciences student from London, Ont., was honoured on offence after he tied the single-game OUA record and came one short of the all-time CIS mark with four touchdown receptions in a crucial 56-3 home win over Laurier, on Saturday. The 6-foot, 200-pound junior broke the game open with a 69-yard score in the opening quarter and also caught TD passes of 55, 11 and 20 yards from freshman Will Finch. Marshall finished with seven catches for 187 yards as the No. 7-ranked Mustangs (4-3) took a serious option on fourth place in the OUA standings and home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
Mount Allison running back Jordan Botel, Sherbrooke quarterback Jérémi Roch and Calgary running back Steven Lumbala were also up for the award.
Rideout, a third-year applied science student from Victoria, took home the weekly honour on defence after he tallied a match-high seven solo tackles and had a pair of touchdown-saving plays in a 24-17 upset win over nationally-ranked Regina (4-2), on Saturday. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound corner intercepted a pass at the Thunderbirds’ two-yard in the second quarter, a play that led to UBC’s first touchdown of the contest, and was back at it again in the second half when he broke up a pass in the end zone. With the win, the T-Birds (2-4) remained in the playoff run with two games remaining on the Canada West schedule.
Linebackers Jerret Laycock of Acadia, Frédéric Plesius of Laval and Jake Reinhart of Guelph were also nominated.
Campbell, a first-year criminology student from Gatineau, Que., was the choice on special teams after he returned the opening kickoff on 107 yards for a touchdown in a 61-0 domination of Waterloo, Saturday in Ottawa. In addition to the longest runback in CIS this season, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound freshman returned two more kickoffs on 42 yards and seven punts on 89 yards, and also racked up 76 yards on four catches to finish the contest with a whopping 314 all-purpose yards. Thanks to the victory, the Gee-Gees (2-5) can still hope to advance to the post-season.
StFX returner Randy Roseway, Montreal kicker David Deschamps and Calgary kicker Johnny Mark were also up for the distinction.

About Football Reporters of Canada
Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) represents journalists and broadcasters in every region of the country covering CIS Football. Since 1958, Football Reporters of Canada has been an organization of media members who have covered the Canadian Football League, serving to select the league’s outstanding players, coach-of-the-year and all-star teams through voting conducted by its members. In 2009, the FRC amalgamated with the University Football Reporters of Canada (UFRC) to give the organization greater scope in its affiliation with amateur and college football. FRC also works with the CFL and CIS to establish guidelines and working conditions for the men and women who report on the game.
