FS O’Brien to stay in Hamilton, joins McMaster

Marauders add another local recruit to their 2017 class.

The steel-mills and high-rise buildings of Hamilton, Ontario have surrounded Joe O’Brien, a free safety from St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School, during his football career and will continue to do so after he signed with the McMaster Marauders.

O’Brien has been calling Hamilton, Ontario his home for quite some time. He first put on the helmet at the age of five. Now, he has the chance to put on the Marauders’ helmet. “McMaster has always been one of the top programs in the country and I’m very familiar with the coaching staff. As a defensive player, I am looking forward to learning from Coach Knox,” he said.

In most recent years, O’Brien hit the field with the St. Thomas More Knights (Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association) and the Hamilton Ironmen (OVFL). “McMaster has a very experienced coaching and as local kid, I’ve been around them for a long time and I’m very excited to get working with them,” he said.

The future social science student won two HWCAA senior championships in 2014 and 2016. The 5’11, 185lbs football player is also a two-time OFSAA champion in 2015 and 2016. In 2015, he was the Knights’ defensive MVP.
