When it came to deciding his future plans, Javin Haughton put academics over his gridiron goals.
Consequently, the 6ā1, 290 pound defensive lineman from Brampton, Ontario has committed to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues for the 2014 OUA season.
āI committed to the University of Toronto because of several factors, but the main one was academic reasons because Football doesn’t last forever,ā explained Haughton of his decision.Ā āUniversity of Toronto is the top in the country in terms of academics and recognized across the world, which is important because I need to prepare myself for the future and being equipped with a solid education is vital.ā
Moreover, Haughton was swayed by the positive direction the football program is heading towards.
āIn terms of the football aspect, I like what Coach Gary and the coaching staff are doing in turning around the football program,ā added Haughton.Ā āI have always wanted to help contribute to a program on the rise and be able to see it flourish in the end, and I see it happening at University of Toronto.ā
Proximity, facilities and atmosphere all played a key role in the Ontario defensive linemanās decision to sign with the Varsity Blues.
āToronto is a great city with lots to offer on the field and off,ā said Haughton.Ā āAlso, the new athletic facility being built is going to be second to none once it is finished and something Iām looking forward to using.ā
Another key factor is the location and the fact Toronto is close to my hometown of Brampton; therefore, my parents and friends could come down and watch my games.ā
Haughton recently played for the St. Roch Ravens of the Region of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association (ROPSSAA).Ā During his time there, he was named Ravens Lineman of the Year (2012).
In addition to the Ravens, Haughton suited up for the Brampton Bulldogs of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL).
