Gaiters add to coaching staff

LENNOXVILLE, Que, – Head Coach Cherif Nicolas and the Bishop’s Gaiters Football program are pleased to announce the hiring of Alex Vertullo and Ted Karabatsos as offensive assistant coaches.

With the additions, Nicolas will take the reins of the offense while Fabrice Raymond will continue to call plays on defense.

Alex Vertullo
Vertullo, a Bishop’s graduate, comes back to Lennoxville after coaching with the Montreal Carabins and more recently the Queen’s Gaels. He was the quarterbacks coach in Kingston.

Last season he helped lead College Ahuntsic to the Bol D’Or as their Offensive Coordinator.

He will be the assistant Offensive Coordinator and receivers coach.

“I’m excited to come home to my Alma mater,” said Vertullo. “I’m looking forward to working with the guys. I really believe in Cherif’s vision. It will be great to work with Cherif, Fabrice and Ted on a daily basis.”

“Alex is a young dynamic coach,” said Nicolas. “He worked under two great coaches in Danny (Maciocia) and Pat (Sheahan) and we look forward to him bringing that experience here.”

Ted Karabatsos
Karabatsos brings over 40 years of coaching experience to Bishop’s.  Most recently, he was the offensive line coach for the Concordia Stingers from 2015-2018. He has also coached at the Universite de Sherbrooke and Universite de Montreal.

“I’m excited to work with Cherif,” said Karabatsos. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to help build a strong unit over the next few years.”

“I’ve known Ted since my playing days,” said Nicolas. “He is one of the best and most dedicated offensive line coaches in the country. He’s not only well versed at that position but knows the whole game; he’s a football junkie.”

Karabatsos will take over coaching the offensive line from Kyle Handy.

“We were sad to see Kyle go, thank him for his time. He had been with the program since his playing days in the late 2000’s,” said Nicolas. “We wish him all the best in the future.”

New Look
Offense
Nicolas moves to the offensive side of the ball where he will call plays in 2019.

Defense
Defensive Coordinator Fabrice Raymond will continue as the play caller on that side of the ball.  He took the helm of the defense halfway through the 2018 campaign after starting as a co-Defensive Coordinator with Nicolas.

“As of game four last year Fab (Raymond) was calling plays,” said Nicolas. “It was our plan the whole time for him to take over; it was never if but when. He has a very good rapport with the players and the defense thrived under him last year.”

Raymond’s defense had two games where opponents did not find the end zone and another where they allowed just one.

The Gaiters’ student-athletes returned to class on Wednesday.  Vertullo and Karabatsos have already started in their positions as the team works during the offseason in preparation for the 2019 Atlantic University Sport campaign.
