Gaiters dump Sherbrooke to notch fifth straight win (VIDEO & STATS)


SHERBROOKE, Que. ā€“ A pair of big plays early in the second quarter paced the Bishopā€™s Gaiters to a 40-10 victory over the Sherbrooke Vert & Or in Quebec University Football League action tonight. At 1:04 of the second, David Haddrall (Kingston ,Ont.) scored on a 69-yard pass-and-run play, the Gaitersā€™ longest play of the year, to break a 3-3 tie. Three plays later, Harrison Maloney (Thurso, Que.) scored his first career touchdown on a 22-yard interception return to give the Gaiters a 17-3 lead.

Sherbrooke pulled to within seven points with three minutes left in the half, as James Goulet, starting at quarterback instead of the injured Jean-Philippe Shoiry, scored on a one-yard plunge. However, they could draw no closer, as they conceded a safety touch to give Bishopā€™s a 19-10 halftime lead.
The Gaiters put the game away early in the fourth quarter, as Jesse Andrews (Pickering, Ont.) scored on a ten-yard scamper to make the score 29-10. A 66-yard punt return touchdown by Quincy Van De Cruize (Etobicoke, Ont.) with 25 seconds left put an exclamation mark on the Gaitersā€™ victory ā€“ their first at Sherbrooke since a 62-0 win on October 11, 2003.
Gaitersā€™ kicker Josh Maveety scored 14 points, as he made three of five field goal attempts, four conversions and a single. He leads the CIS with 82 points, and holds the school single-season points record. A first-quarter William Dion field goal rounded out Sherbrookeā€™s scoring.
The Gaiters amassed 407 yards of total offence, while holding Sherbrooke to 260. The Gaiters defence held Sherbrooke to only 61 yards rushing, and forced five Sherbrooke turnovers. Bishopā€™s committed no turnovers.
Andrews completed 17 of 27 pass attempts for 310 yards and a touchdown, his first 300-yard day of the season. Andrews was also the Gaitersā€™ leading rusher, with six carries for 40 yards and a touchdown. Two Gaiters went over 100 yards receiving, as Haddrall finished with four catches for 113 yards and a major, while Olivier Mongeau (Sorel, Que.) finished with four catches for 102.
For Sherbrooke, Goulet went 13-for-33 for 211 yards with two interceptions. Simon Charbonneau-Campeau caught six passes for 97 yards while Alex Poirier caught four for 70. David Dumas-Goulet led the Vert & Or rushers with 14 carries for 77 yards.
Defensively, Mathieu Boulay (Magog, Que.) led Bishopā€™s with 4.0 tackles, including a sack and a forced fumble, while Tyler Jutras (Chateauguay, Que.) had 3.5 tackles, including a tackle for loss. Steven Adu (Woodbridge, Ont.) made 4.5 tackles and knocked down a pass.
Emmanuel ThĆ©riault led Sherbrookeā€™s defence with four tackles and a pair of sacks.
The Gaiters (5-1) return to action on Sunday, October 17 as the visit the No. 1-ranked Laval Rouge et Or. Kickoff at the PEPS stadium is set for 1 p.m. Sherbrookeā€™s (2-4) next game is Saturday, October 16 as they host the Concordia Stingers.




NOTES: The all-time series is now tied 7-7 ā€¦ This is the first win by a road team in the series since a 39-19 Sherbrooke win in Lennoxville on Sept. 5, 2005 ā€¦ The Gaiters had lost five straight games at Sherbrooke ā€¦ This is the first time the Gaiters have had two 100-yard receivers since Sept. 4, 2009 at Sherbrooke, when Shawn Gore and Olivier Mongeau both had 100-yard games ā€¦ Olivier Mongeau went over the 1,000-yard barrier today. He now has 1,088 career receiving yards.
