Gee-Gees add Goff & Martin to staff: Announce 3rd full time position & Zmich moves on

The uOttawa Gee-Gees football program is pleased to announce the addition of a full-time contract assistant coaching position that will be filled this summer. The Gee-Gees would also like to welcome two new additions to their coaching staff with the arrival of Nelson Martin as defensive assistant coach and Corey Goff as defensive linemen coach.

Martin was the defensive back coach with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL for the past two seasons, while Goff was the running backs coach, special teams assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with the University of Manitoba.

“(uOttawa) is a very successful school that was one play away from winning the Yates Cup,” said Martin. “Already I feel there is a good chemistry between the coaches so I feel honoured and privileged to be a part of such a successful program.”

Martin is committed to bringing his passion and enthusiasm for football to this team, and hopes he can help them take their game to the next level: “I’m excited about getting to work this weekend at spring camp, this summer, and coming back in the fall to achieve the ultimate goal of winning a Vanier Cup.”

“Adding Nelson to our coaching staff brings in yet another coach with CFL experience,” said Gee-Gees head coach Jean-Philippe Asselin. “He’s going to do a lot work behind the scenes along with coach Timmons and coach Costanzo with defensive backs, line backers and coverage. To have a coach with that type of experience and who wants to help is a very big step for us.”

“Both Nelson and Corey are dedicated coaches that will put in a lot of hours, and help us get better. Corey’s recruiting experience with Manitoba will also be great for our program, he knows how it works and that will be very helpful in moving our program forward.”

“We needed to rebuild our defensive coaching staff, and I’m very happy we are adding Corey and Nelson. I don’t think we could have found more qualified people,” added Asselin.

On a sadder note, the Gee-Gees football program will be saying goodbye to alumni outreach coordinator Rick Zmich. Rick has made significant contributions to the football program by taking the lead on various fundraising initiatives for the last couple of years. In addition to revamping the annual Touchdown Dinner, he also helped establish the Adopt a Gee-Gee program.

“I would like to thank Rick for all his hard work,” said coach Asselin. “All that hard work and the support of our alumni have created this opportunity for us to add another paid coach to our staff. This was a big a part of his mandate and we are very grateful for all of his years of service to the program.”

In addition to his on-field coaching duties, the new coach will be responsible for leading the program’s fundraising initiatives. The position will be filled this summer.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
