Next season, the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees will begin practising and playing on new state-of-the-art environmentally friendly artificial turf, FieldTurf Revolution.
βThe University of Ottawa Gee-Gees have produced some of Canadaβs finest athletes. But to develop the best athletes possible, we need top-calibre facilities,β says Luc GΓ©lineau, director of Sports Services. βThe new FieldTurf artificial turf on the Matt Anthony Field will help us in recruiting and retaining some of the best soccer, rugby and football student-athletes and will be crucial to our programsβ continued success.β
The newly resurfaced field will be the first of its kind in Canada and only the second field with FieldTurf Revolution artificial turf in North America. FieldTurf, considered the world leader in artificial turf, is FIFA-recommended. For 10 consecutive years, FieldTurf was voted the leader among all artificial turf brands by the National Football League Players Association.
βWith a first-class facility, we are very excited to be the leader of the pack in Canada,β says Gee-Gees head football coach Jean-Philippe Asselin. βAn emphasis on safety as well as improved athletic performance are really important factors for our program.β
FieldTurf artificial surfaces are even greener than they look. The field is lead free and 100% recyclable. In addition, the Gee-Gees and FieldTurf will be collecting and recycling old running shoes to use as infill for the new field, and the old artificial turf will be removed and recycled. Sports Services is pleased to contribute to the University of Ottawaβs sustainable development initiatives by choosing a green product like FieldTurf Revolution and participating in the recycling program.
The new artificial surface, which will be installed this spring, will have a FIFA-recommended 2-Star designation upon completion. This is the highest synthetic turf rating. βWe are very fortunate to have the opportunity to practice and compete every day on a field of this calibre,β said Steve Johnson, head coach of the Gee-Gees womenβs soccer program. βThere are only about 20 FIFA 2-star fields in Canada.β
Replacement of the artificial turf will begin in mid-April and will take approximately nine weeks to complete.
