Gee-Gees spend Week 2 in Waterloo

The Gee-Gees football team travels to Waterloo for a Labour Day kickoff with the Warriors on Monday, Sept. 2, seeking to even up their record at 1-1 before christening their new home field at the home opener on Saturday the 7th.

Both Waterloo and Ottawa were hit with large losses on the scoreboard in week one, as Waterloo was downed 78-11 by Windsor’s massive rushing total of 398 yards. The difference between the two 0-1 clubs is that the Gee-Gees posted solid numbers in their 51-24 defeat at the hands of McMaster.

The offence tallied 427 net yards, higher than all but two of last year’s games, and Aaron Colbon posted a 65 per cent completion rate on 35 catches, establishing a new career high in completions. Third-year receiver Ian Stewart of Burlington, Ont. was the primary target and also had a career day with ten receptions and two touchdowns.

On the other side of the ball, Ottawa’s defence limited McMaster to 492 yards of total offence – just the second time in the last ten regular season games that the high-powered Marauders have been held under 500 yards. Up front, Ettore Lattanzio started the year off strong by gaining 22 yards on two sacks, ranking him second in the league after one week.

Heading into week two the Gee-Gees must focus on limiting the turnovers which cost them so dearly at Ron Joyce Stadium. They will also be faced with Β Waterloo’s all-star receiver Nick Anapolsky, who was the OUA’s second-most prolific receiver last season. In last season’s meeting between the two squads, Ottawa running back Brendan Gillanders ran wild with four touchdowns and 246 yards rushing. Given Waterloo’s difficulties containing the Lancers’ ground attack, the Gee-Gees will certainly look to take advantage once again.

NOTES: Four OUA teams cracked the first CIS Top Ten poll for 2013 – Queen’s (2), Western (4), McMaster (6), Guelph (7)… Ottawa has won the last 10 consecutive games and holds a 20-1 all-time record over Waterloo… This will be Ottawa’s first visit to Warrior Field since the grandstand and artificial surface were added in 2010… The last time Ottawa played at Waterloo was 2009’s 45-11 win
