Gee-Gees to host Guelph: Will Sinopoli break record? (VIDEO)

It’s time for YOU to join the stampede! Come out and cheer on your University of Ottawa Gee-Gees football team as they battle for first place in the OUA against the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, October 23 at 1:00 p.m. This is your chance to see history in the making as fourth-year quarterback Brad Sinopoli of Peterborough, Ont., will attempt to break the CIS record for most passing yards in a season.

The uOttawa Gee-Gees are back in action this weekend as they welcome the Guelph Gryphons to Frank Clair Stadium for their final regular season game. They will look to pick up from where they left off before last week’s bye and after a 44-21 victory over Laurier on October 9, 2010.

In a record-breaking game that saw fourth-year quarterback Brad Sinopoli, Peterborough, Ont., become the all-time Gee-Gees leader in attempts in a season (272), completions in a season (165), and passing yards in a season (2552). Still, Brad is done yet; he is also tied with former Gee-Gee Josh Sacobie for most touchdowns in a season at 21, and has a legitimate shot of cracking the CIS all-time record for passing yards in a season (3033).

Still Brad will not be the only one breaking records this weekend, fifth-year receiver Steven Hughes, Ottawa, Ont., will be looking to become the all-time Gee-Gees leader for most receptions in a season. He currently has 54, while the record stands at 60. However, with Hughes leading all receivers in the OUA, and averaging 11.85 receptions per game, the record is clearly within his reach.

Coming into this week ranked No. 5 among the CIS Top Ten, the Gee-Gees are apparently still suffering the lingering effects from that upset loss to Toronto back on October 2, 2010. With that said, the garnet and grey are eager to prove themselves once again this weekend, and would like nothing more to finish their regular season at 7-1, and claim top spot in the OUA. And for some added motivation, the game will be broadcasted live across the country as part of the Scores Rush University programming.

Thoughts from head coach Jean-Philippe Asselin

“We feel rested, a little more healthy, and anxious to get back out there. Its ‘definitely a big game for our program. For our guys it will be a good experience to be on national television with the chance to clinch first place in the OUA, so it’s a big game in that sense yes.
