Gee-Gees win first game of season over Blues

Fourth-year running back Brendan Gillanders rushed 25 times for 114 yards and three majors as the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees notched their first win of the season with a 34-6 victory over the Varsity Blues on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 6) at Varsity Centre.

With the loss, the Blues drop to 2-4, while the Gee-Gees, under the guidance of their new interim coaching staff, improve to 1-5 on the year.
Richard Quittenton (Ajax, Ont.) and Simon Nassar (Toronto) split duties at quarterback, throwing for 51 and 57 yards, respectively. Third-year receiver Paul de Pass (Ajax, Ont.) led the Blues with three catches for 42 yards.
Sophomore linebacker Dylan Gordon of Cambridge, Ont., tallied a game-high eight tackles, and Toronto native Kevin Bradfield was named the Varsity Blues player of the game with 162 return yards in the loss.
On a day where nothing went their way, U of T was only able to muster 141 yards in total offence, compared to the 368 put up by the visitors.  The Blues were penalized 20 times for 155 yards, with the Gee-Gees flagged for 60 yards on seven penalties.
Gillanders (Orleans, Ont.) opened the scoring, capping off a nine-play, 84-yard drive with a four-yard rushing major midway through the first quarter. Ottawa extended their lead late in the second as fifth-year veteran Matt Falvo of Welland, Ont., kicked a 33-yard field goal and the Gee-Gees went onto extend their lead to 18-0 with another Gillander four-yard TD.
Blues veteran kicker Andrew Lomasney (Toronto) finally got the Blues on the board with a 29-yard field goal with five seconds remaining in the half. On the ensuing play, Ottawa quarterback Aaron Colbon (Ottawa) fumbled the ball, setting up another Lomansey field goal, this time from 40 yards out to give the Blues some momentum going into the half. Ottawa still held the upper had, and led 18-6 into halftime.
Falvo kicked 42 and 46-yard field goals and Gillanders would score his third touchdown of the game on a two-yard run as the Gee-Gees extended their lead to 31-6 heading into the final frame.
Falvo scored the only points of the fourth quarter on another 46-yard field goal as the Gee-Gees walked away with a 34-6 win.
Colbon was 13-of-26 for 198 yards, while Maxine Mireault led all players with 87 receiving yards on four catches.
