Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of October: Lulay, Parker, McCallum, Messam

TORONTO – Travis Lulay, Byron Parker, Paul McCallum and Jerome Messam were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Month for October of the 2011 season.

Note: this month also includes the final week of the regular season in November.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan (@MattDuniganTSN) and Duane Forde (@DuaneFordeTSN), now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.


Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Month

QB – Travis Lulay (@TravisLulay) – BC Lions

Highlights / Key Stats:

BC Lions quarterback Travis Lulay has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Month. In October, Lulay completed 92 of 158 pass attempts for a 58.2 completion percentage, 1,359 total passing yards and 12 touchdowns. His longest pass was 72 yards. Lulay also had 11 carries for 112 rushing yards this month.

Lulay is ranked second in the league with 4,815 passing yards.

With Lulay at the helm, the Lions won four of the past five games and went from a 0-5 start to first place in the West Division by the end of the regular season.


Gibson’s Finest CFL Defensive Player of the Month

CB – Byron Parker (@byronparker28) – Toronto Argonauts

Highlights / Key Stats:

Toronto Argonauts cornerback Byron Parker has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Defensive Player of the Month. In October, Parker registered 13 tackles and returned two interceptions for touchdowns.

Parker’s second interception of the month, resulting in a 50-yard score, was the ninth interception return for a touchdown of his career, setting a new CFL all-time record. Parker surpassed previous record holders Dick Thornton, Malcolm Frank and Jason Gross.

At the end of the 2011 regular season, Parker is ranked fifth in the league with five interceptions.


Gibson’s Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Month

P/K – Paul McCallum (@PaulMcCallum4) – BC Lions

Highlights / Key Stats:

B.C. Lions punter/kicker Paul McCallum has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Month for the second month in a row. McCallum connected on 17 of 18 field goal attempts and 13 converts for a total of 64 kicking points in October. His longest field goal was from 53-yards out and he averaged 32.12 yards per field goal. McCallum finished the season with a 94.3 field goal percentage, which breaks Lui Passaglia’s record of 90.9 set in 2000.

In the Lions’ week 15 matchup against the Calgary Stampeders, McCallum set a new CFL record, kicking his 30th-consecutive field goal and surpassing Dave Ridgway, the former consecutive field goal record holder.

He also had 31 punts for 1,218 yards, with an average of 39.29 yards per punt. His longest punt was 56 yards.

McCallum is ranked first in the league with 203 kicking points and fifth in the league with a punting average of 42.1 yards.


Gibson’s Finest CFL Canadian Player of the Month

RB – Jerome Messam – Edmonton Eskimos

Highlights / Key Stats:

Edmonton Eskimos running back Jerome Messam has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Canadian Player of the Month for the second time this season. Messam had 72 carries for 400 rushing yards, with an average of 5.56 yards per carry, and two touchdowns in October alone. He also caught 13 passes for 144 yards, with an average of 11.08 per reception.

In the Esks’ last regular season game, the Brampton, Ontario native surpassed 1,000 rushing yards, becoming the first Canadian to do so since Sean Millington in 2000.

Messam is ranked third in the league with 1,057 rushing yards in 2011.
