Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Month 2011 – September

TORONTO — Brandon Whitaker, Jerrell Freeman, Paul McCallum and Jon Cornish were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Month for September of the 2011 season.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan (@MattDuniganTSN) and Duane Forde (@DuaneFordeTSN), now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.


Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Month

RB – Brandon Whitaker (@B_Whit2) – Montreal Alouettes

Highlights / Key Stats:

Montreal Alouettes running back Brandon Whitaker has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Month. In September, Whitaker registered 65 carries for 367 yards, with an average of 5.6 yards per carry, and a touchdown. His longest carry this month was 27 yards. Whitaker also caught 21 passes for 222 yards, including a 35-yarder, and three touchdowns.

Whitaker leads the league with 981 rushing yards and was named Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Week last week.


Gibson’s Finest CFL Defensive Player of the Month

LB – Jerrell Freeman (@JerrellFreeman) – Saskatchewan Roughriders

Highlights / Key Stats:

Saskatchewan Roughriders linebacker Jerrell Freeman has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Defensive Player of the Month. Freeman registered 31 tackles, a sack and an interception for a 24-yard return in September.

He is currently ranked second in the league with 74 tackles this season and was named Gibson’s Finest CFL Defensive Player of the Week earlier this month.


Gibson’s Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Month

P/K – Paul McCallum (@PaulMcCallum4) – BC Lions

Highlights / Key Stats:

B.C. Lions punter/kicker Paul McCallum has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Month. McCallum connected on all 15 field goal attempts and 16 converts, and recorded 3 singles for a total of 64 points in September. His longest field goal was from 48-yards out and he averaged 28.9 yards per field goal. McCallum has connected on 27-consecutive field goals, just one away from Dave Ridgeway’s record set in 1993 with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

He also had 27 punts for 1,201 yards, with an average of 44.5 yards per punt, and a single. His longest punt was 63 yards.

McCallum is ranked third in the league with 139 kicking points and fourth in the league with 3,965 punting yards.


Gibson’s Finest CFL Canadian Player of the Month

RB – Jon Cornish (@jonnycornish) – Calgary Stampeders

Highlights / Key Stats:

Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Canadian Player of the Month. Cornish registered 34 carries for 336 yards, with an average of 9.88 yards per carry, and two touchdowns. His longest carry in September was 38 yards.

Cornish also caught eight passes for 166 yards, with an average of 20.75 yards. His longest reception was 62 yards.

The B.C.-born running back was also named Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive and Canadian Player of the Week for week 14 of the regular season.
