Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Month 2011

TORONTO — Henry Burris, Solomon Elimimian, Sean Whyte and Johnny Forzani were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Month for August of the 2011 season.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.


Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Month

QB – Henry Burris – Calgary Stampeders

Highlights / Key Stats:

Calgary Stampeders quarterback Henry Burris has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Month. Through three undefeated games in August, Burris completed 74 of 110 attempted passes for 1,061 yards and seven touchdowns, and did not throw one interception. The Stamps’ pivot also registered six carries for 59 yards and a touchdown.

Burris is ranked second in the league with 2,462 passing yards this season, just two yards behind Anthony Calvillo.

The 13-year CFL veteran has led the Stamps to first-place in the West Division with a 6-2 record going into week 10 of the regular season.


Gibson’s Finest CFL Defensive Player of the Month

LB – Solomon Elimimian – BC Lions

Highlights / Key Stats:

BC Lions linebacker Solomon Elimimian has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Defensive Player of the Month. In August, Elimimian registered 23 tackles, a special teams tackle, two quarterback sacks and an interception with a 15-yard return.

Elimimian had the best showing of this CFL career against the Saskatchewan Roughriders earlier this month, registering 12 tackles, a special teams tackle and a quarterback sack in a single game.

Last season’s Most Outstanding Rookie leads the league with 54 tackles and helped the Lions attain a 2-1 record in August after starting the season with five winless games.

Gibson’s Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Month

P/K – Sean Whyte – Montreal Alouettes

Highlights / Key Stats:

Montreal Alouettes punter/kicker Sean Whyte has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Month. Throughout August, Whyte connected on all nine field goal attempts and nine converts, and registered two singles. Whyte has contributed 38 points to the Als’ 94 total points scored this month.

August’s two-time Gibson’s Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Week registered 19 punts for 836 yards, with an average of 44, and two singles.

Whyte leads the league with 95 kicking points and has kicked 22-consecutive field goals this season. He is currently tied with Sean Fleming of the 2001 Edmonton Eskimos and is six field goals away from tying the all-time record of 28 consecutive field goals held by Dave Ridgway of the 1993 Saskatchewan Roughriders.


Gibson’s Finest CFL Canadian Player of the Month

WR – Johnny Forzani – Calgary Stampeders

Highlights / Key Stats:

Calgary Stampeders wide receiver Johnny Forzani has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Canadian Player of the Month. Forzani caught 10 passes, including a 46-yarder, for a total of 225 receiving yards in August. Forzani impressed his hometown of Calgary on Saturday night catching six passes for a career-high 101 yards and the first two touchdown receptions of his CFL career.
