Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week 15: Calvillo, Stewart, McCallum, Messam (ESPN video)

TORONTO — Anthony Calvillo, Anwar Stewart, Paul McCallum and Jerome Messam were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week for the 15th week of the 2011 season.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges including: former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan (@MattDuniganTSN) and Duane Forde (@DuaneFordeTSN), now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

Montreal Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season.

It was an historic Thanksgiving weekend for Calvillo, as a 50-yard touchdown pass to Jamel Richardson (@JamelRichardson ) in the third quarter of Monday afternoon’s game made him the new CFL and professional football all-time passing yards record holder.

In the Als’ 29-19 victory over the Toronto Argonauts, Calvillo completed 26-of-38 pass attempts for 305 yards. He also had two carries for 20 yards, including a 19-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter. This was Calvillo’s first rushing touchdown of the season.

The three-time CFL record holder leads the league with 4,268 passing yards this season and 72,429 career passing yards to date.

Montreal Alouettes defensive end Anwar Stewart has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Defensive Player of the Week. In Monday afternoon’s 29-19 win over the Toronto Argonauts, Stewart registered three tackles and two quarterback sacks. Stewart’s first sack came in the second quarter resulting in a nine-yard loss. His second sack came in the third quarter for a two-yard loss and a safety.


Gibson’s Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Week

BC Lions punter/kicker Paul McCallum has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time this season. In Saturday night’s matchup, McCallum made the CFL record books, kicking his 30th-consecutive field goal, and surpassing former consecutive field goal record holder Dave Ridgway.

McCallum’s longest field goal this season was also the game winner against the Calgary Stampeders, coming on the last play of the game from 53-yards out. The Lions’ 33-31 victory vaulted BC into first place in the West Division.

During the divisional matchup, McCallum connected on four-of-five field goal attempts and all three converts. He also had five punts for 228 yards, with an average of 45.6, including a 56-yarder.

Jerome Messam
RB – Edmonton Eskimos

Edmonton Eskimos running back Jerome Messam has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Canadian Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. In Monday afternoon’s 17-1 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Messam had 20 carries for 118 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown. He also caught three Ricky Ray passes for a career-high 42 yards, including an 18-yarder.
