Gibson’s Finest 2013 CFL Players of the Week (15): Cornish, Brown & Ford

TORONTO – Jon Cornish, Jerald Brown and Will Ford were named the Gibson’s Finest Players of the Week for Week 15 of the 2013 Canadian Football League season.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges including: former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish was named the Offensive and Canadian Player of the Week for Week 15. Cornish had 17 carries for a season-high 208 yards including a 50 and a 7-yard touchdown run to help the Stampeders defeat the Blue Bombers, 38-11.

Cornish, a University of Kansas product, also added two receptions for 24 yards in the game.

After his big performance, Cornish now leads the CFL in rushing with 1,415 yards (113 yards better than Saskatchewan’s Kory Sheets) and is only 42 yards away from matching his record for Canadian running backs of 1,457 yards that he set last season.

Cornish, a New Westminster, B.C. native, takes home Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Week and Gibson’s Finest CFL Canadian Player of the Week during the same week for the second time this season, the first coming in Week 7.

Montreal Alouettes defensive back Jerald Brown was named the Defensive Player of the Week for Week 15. Brown recorded three tackles and caught two interceptions in Montreal’s 47-24 road win over Edmonton.

Brown intercepted a Mike Reilly pass deep in Alouettes territory and returned it 8 yards, which then quickly turned into seven points for Montreal after a three play drive that resulted in a S.J. Green touchdown. Brown then intercepted his second pass in the third quarter off of Jonathan Crompton and returned it into Eskimo territory, where where Arland Bruce finished off the drive with a touchdown.

The veteran is now tied for first in the league in interceptions with five and sixth on the Alouettes with 44 tackles this season.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers kick returner Will Ford was named the Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 15. Ford returned four kicks for 148 yards (37.0 yard punt return average) including a 100-yard kick return touchdown in the third quarter, in Winnipeg’s loss 38-11 loss in Calgary.

Ford, a South Carolina State University standout and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference all-time rushing leader, accumulated 309 all-purpose yards in the game.

With the Blue Bombers this season, Ford has 776 combined returned yards and has rushed for 371. Ford has two kickoff return touchdowns this year, with his other coming in Week 11 against Saskatchewan where he returned a kickoff 98 yards.
