Gibson’s Finest 2013 CFL Players of the Week (16): Gable, Curran, Maver & Cornish

TORONTO – C.J. Gable, Rennie Curran, Rob Maver and Jon Cornish were named the Gibson’s Finest Players of the Week for Week 16 of the 2013 Canadian Football League season.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges including: former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

C.J. Gable
RB – Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Hamilton Tiger-Cats running back C.J. Gable was named the Offensive Player of the Week for Week 16. Gable had 17 carries for a game-high 118 yards and a 2-yard touchdown run to help the Tiger-Cats sweep the Argos in the home and home series, 24-18.

Gable, a CFL rookie and University of Southern California product, also added five receptions for 46 yards in the game.

In the past three games, Gable has started to heat up for the Tiger-Cats, accumulating 346 yards on the ground on 46 carries (7.5 YPC) and two touchdowns.

For the season, he is ranked fourth in the league in rushing with 783 yards and has proven to be a dual threat offensively, as he’s fourth on the Tiger-Cats with 536 receiving yards.

Rennie Curran
LB – Edmonton Eskimos
Edmonton Eskimos 9 @ Saskatchewan Roughriders 14

Edmonton Eskimos linebacker Rennie Curran was named the Defensive Player of the Week for Week 16. Curran recorded a career-high eleven tackles and caught an interception in Edmonton’s narrow 14-9 loss to Saskatchewan.

Curran intercepted his first-career pass off Darian Durant, which was intended for Taj Smith and returned it 21 yards.

Curran, a former two-time All-SEC player with University of Georgia, has recorded 47 tackles in 13 games this season, good enough for third on the Eskimos.

Rob Maver
P – Calgary Stampeders
BC Lions 26 @ Calgary Stampeders 40

Calgary Stampeders punter Rob Maver was named the Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 16. Maver had five punts in the game for a total of 245 yards (49.0 average/punt) including a 57-yard punt in Calgary’s win 40-26 win over BC.

Maver, a Brampton, ON native and Guelph product is currently third in the CFL in punting average with 45.1 yards per punt this season.

Jon Cornish
RB – Calgary Stampeders
BC Lions 26 @ Calgary Stampeders 40

Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish was named the Canadian Player of the Week for Week 16. Cornish ran for 130 yards on 15 carries (8.7 YPC) and scored a touchdown in Calgary’s win over the Lions.

Cornish scored on a 2-yard run and also had three receptions for 35 yards.

The seven-year veteran from New Westminster, BC has been catching fire in the past three games, rushing for 452 yards on only 47 carries (9.6 YPC).

The Kansas University product broke his own record for most rushing yards in a season by a Canadian and broke Andrew Harris’ for most yards from scrimmage by a Canadian in a season during the game.

Cornish currently leads the CFL in rushing (1,545 yards) and touchdowns (13) this season with three weeks to play. Cornish has won Gibson’s Finest CFL Canadian Player of the Week five times this season, including in Weeks 1, 7, 11 and 15.
