Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week #8: Elliott, Hall, Williams, Muamba

TORONTO – Joey Elliott, Alex Hall, Chris Williams and Cauchy Muamba were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week for Week Eight, the Canadian Football League announced today.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Week:

Joey Elliott
QB – Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Hamilton Tiger-Cats 25 @ Winnipeg Blue Bombers 32

Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Joey Elliott was named the Offensive Player of the Week for Week Eight. Elliott completed 33 of 43 passes and threw for 406 yards and one touchdown in the Bombers 32-25 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Elliott was impressive in his third career start as he broke the 17-17 deadlock with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Chris Matthews at 12:50 of the fourth quarter.

Elliott’s solid performance helped the Bombers hold off the Ticats for a crucial week eight victory that moved them within one game of the Ticats in the East Division.

Gibson’s Finest CFL Defensive Player of the Week:

Alex Hall
DE – Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Hamilton Tiger-Cats 25 @ Winnipeg Blue Bombers 32

Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive end Alex Hall was named the Defensive Player of the Week for Week Eight. Hall played a big role in the 32-25 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats collecting one tackle, one sack, and forcing two fumbles. Hall’s two forced fumbles were instrumental in the Bombers win as his first with 2:07 remaining in the first quarter saved a touchdown and his second came midway through the fourth quarter as the Ticats were threatening to make a late comeback.

Gibson’s Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Week:

Chris Williams
WR/KR – Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Hamilton Tiger-Cats 25 @ Winnipeg Blue Bombers 32

Hamilton Tiger-Cats wide receiver/kick returner Chris Williams was named the Special Teams Player of the Week for Week Eight. Williams ran for 146 yards and one touchdown on five punt returns in the 32-25 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. His performance on Thursday night at Canad Inns Stadium was good enough to earn him his second 2012 Special Teams Player of the Week award.

Williams’ punt return touchdown (fourth kick return for a touchdown this season) put him one back of Henry Williams, Bashir Levingston and Keith Stokes for the most kick returns for a touchdown in a CFL season.

Gibson’s Finest CFL Canadian Player of the Week:

Cauchy Muamba
S – BC Lions
Saskatchewan 5 @ BC Lions 24

BC Lions safety Cauchy Muamba was named the Canadian Player of the Week for Week Eight. The former St. Francis Xavier X-Men registered one tackle and two interceptions in the 24-5 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Muamba’s strong defensive play was good enough to earn him his first 2012 Player of the Week award and help his team to the best record in the league.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
