Golden Bear Wright drafted by Eskimos

Fifth-year University of Alberta Golden Bears football student-athlete Smith Wright was drafted by the Edmonton Eskimos in the seventh round, 55th overall, of the 2013 Canadian Football League draft on Monday, May 6.

Originally from Calgary, the 6-2 and 220 lbs Wright is a fullback for the CIS version of the Green and Gold who has rushed 29 times for 74 yards and three touchdowns. He has also hauled in 13 receptions for 113 yards and returned a pair of kick-offs for 10 yards.

A student in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation, Wright is a dual-sport athlete as he also competes for the Golden Bears track and field team. In 2012, at his first Canada West track and field championship, Wright competed in shot put and collected a silver medal.

He is the first Golden Bear to be drafted by a CFL club since kicker Hugh O’Neill was drafted by the B.C. Lions in 2011, and the third member of the Bears to be drafted by the CFL’s Green and Gold since 2001.
