Golden Bears welcome Calgary-area commit

The University of Alberta’s commitment class grows by one more.

Matthew Misiewicz, a defensive tackle from Notre Dame High School, is ready to further not only his football career, but his educational career with the University of Alberta Golden Bears.

Misiewicz will be heading north from his hometown of Airdrie, Alberta, which is north of Calgary, to reach his new school. For this athlete, academics was one of the most prominent factors in his decision-making process.

β€œI chose U of A because I want to get the best education and I believe that will be with this school. The school appealed to me because they put so much effort into football but at the end of the day, it’s the education that matters to them and they will do everything they can to help you with it,” he said. He added that he is interested in taking sports coaching or physical education.

The former member of the Notre Dame Pride (Calgary High School Athletic Association) is also looking forward to training with the university’s coaching staff. β€œThey bring so much experience to the table and it pumps me up knowing that they will push me to be the greatest football player I can be,” he said.

Standing at 6’2, 265lbs, Misiewicz spent a few years out his ten-year career playing minor football with the Airdrie Raiders (Calgary Area Midget Football Association). During his last year with the Raiders in 2016, he was named as the MVP. That year, with the Pride, he was named lineman of the year.
