Golden Hawks announce first 17 recruits for 2015

Golden Hawks adding talent and depth at a variety of positions leading into next season

WATERLOO, Ont  – Head Coach Michael Faulds and the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team announced on Friday their first wave of recruits that have committed to the purple and gold for the 2015 season.

Seventeen players have already agreed to join the Golden Hawks next year over a wide variety of positions. Highlighting the group are a member of Team Canada’s U18 squad, running back Jamal Hooker from Saskatchewan, and London high school player of the year, defensive back Scott Hutter.

“We are extremely excited with how recruiting for the 2015 season has gone so far,” said Faulds on the first additions to this year’s class. “Our staff, led by recruiting coordinator Dwayne Cameron, has done a phenomenal job adding a ton of talent to our roster. This recruiting class is by no means over yet, but with this great start we will be a better football team in 2015.”

“While this class in loaded with talent, more importantly it is loaded with quality character kids and incredibly intelligent students. They will be great additions to the whole Laurier community,” added Faulds.

The offensive line continues to be the focus for Coach Faulds and his staff as five of the 17 committed players suit up in that position. Coached by former CFL All-Star Irv Daymond, Laurier’s offensive line has made tremendous strides since Faulds took over as head coach and the incoming players promise to add to the talent and skill already present at the position.

The group of committed players for 2015 also includes three receivers, two running backs, two linebackers, two defensive linemen, two defensive backs and a kicker.

“We are happy with the direction in recruiting and we are thrilled with the response we are receiving from recruits in Ontario and across the country,” commented Laurier recruiting coordinator, special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach Dwayne Cameron. “We will continue to address the need areas on our roster and look to close out this recruiting class strong in the next few weeks with some of the best players in Ontario.”
