Golden Hawks take the field for first practices of 2012

The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team opened up training camp on Monday morning with their first practices of the 2012 season.

The incoming rookie class, which features 47 new Golden Hawks, were on the field first as they were run through their first set of drills wearing the purple and gold. The full squad then hit the field this afternoon for their first practice as a complete unit.

“We’ve got a large freshman class but the kids that are returning have worked extremely hard,” commented Head Coach Gary Jeffries. “You can feel the excitement on the field and we’re anxious to get started and see what we look like.”

“It’s a good feeling [to be back],” said Anton Bennett, who is moving to receiver after playin g three years at running back for the Hawks. “The way we ended the season last year [at Queen’s] was tough so it’s good to be back with a fresh start.”

Laurier’s training camp will run over the course of the next two weeks and will feature an integrated practice with the Western Mustangs as well as a scrimmage against the Waterloo Warriors.

The Hawks open the regular season on Labour Day Monday, September 3, when they travel to Toronto to take on the Varsity Blues.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
