Graves, Holden and Taylor named AUS Football Players of the Week 5


October 12, 2010 (HALIFAX, N.S.) – Quarterback Kyle Graves of the CIS No. 10 ranked Acadia Axemen, along with Saint Mary’s defensive back Mark Holden and kick returner Jahmeek Taylor have been selected as the Atlantic University Sport Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 10th, 2010.

Quarterback Kyle Graves of the CIS No. 10 ranked Acadia Axemen is the Atlantic University Sport Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 10th, 2010. Graves, a third year student from Barrie, ON, led the Axemen to a 26-19 come-from-behind win over the Mount Allison Mounties this past weekend in Sackville, NB. In the victory, Kyle completed 14-of-26 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown, rushed for another 44 yards and caught a 61-yard touchdown pass from receiver Stu Clow early in the third quarter. Graves also found Clow for a score early in the fourth quarter from 17 yards out as Acadia overcame an 18-0 deficit and moved into first place in the Atlantic conference with the win. Graves currently ranks third in the Atlantic conference in rushing yards with 234 and ranks second in passing yards with 769 through five games this season.

Saint Mary’s defensive back Mark Holden is the Atlantic University Sport Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 10th, 2010. Holden, a fourth year student-athlete from Halifax, NS, registered two solo tackles and a career-high three interceptions in the Huskies’ 43-16 road win over the StFX X-Men this past weekend in Antigonish, NS. Mark, a 2009 AUS all-star defensive back, intercepted StFX QB Cory Wensley twice in the third quarter of Friday’s game and returned his fourth quarter interception 77 yards for a touchdown to give the Huskies a 38-9 lead. In total, Holden registered 89 yards in interception return yardage in the victory.

Special Teams Player of the Week

For the second week in a row, Saint Mary’s receiver and kick returner Jahmeek Taylor has been named the Atlantic University Sport Special Teams Player of the Week. Taylor, a third year player from Mississauga, ON, had another outstanding game this past weekend as the Huskies (2-3) defeated the StFX X-Men (1-4) by a score of 43-16 in Antigonish, NS. Jahmeek, also named the Subway Player of the Game for his performance, had 252 all-purpose yards in the game including two punt return touchdowns. His punt return TD’s spanned 56-yards and 63-yards respectively during a five minute span in the third quarter that increased the Saint Mary’s lead from 14-7 to 28-7. Taylor also rushed the ball four times for 39 yards and caught two passes for 44 yards in the win. Jahmeek’s three punt return touchdowns this season tie the AUS record for punt return touchdowns in a single season and are a new school record. His 486 punt return yards through five games are also a new Saint Mary’s single-season record. Taylor, the 2008 AUS Rookie of the Year, currently leads the Atlantic conference in all-purpose yards (919), touchdowns scored (4) and punt return yards (486).
