Graves, Labenski and Szilagyi named AUS Football Players of the Week


September 28, 2010 (HALIFAX, N.S.) – Quarterback Kyle Graves and linebacker Tom Labenski of the Acadia Axemen, along with Mount Allison Mounties kicker John Szilagyi have been selected as the Atlantic University Sport Football Players of the Week for the period ending September 26th, 2010.


Offensive Player of the Week

Quarterback Kyle Graves of the Acadia Axemen is the Atlantic University Sport Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending September 26th, 2010. Graves, a third year student from Barrie, ON, completed 21-of-33 attempts for 254 yards passing, a touchdown and no interceptions this past weekend to lead Acadia (2-1) to a 24-11 home win over the StFX X-Men (0-3). Graves, who averaged 36.6 yards punting in the victory, also picked up 54 yards rushing on 11 carries for 308 yards of total offence on the day. Kyle currently ranks second in the conference in passing yards (550 yards) and is the AUS leader in passing TD’s with four, rushing yards (54.7 per game) and punting average (37.0 yards per punt).


Defensive Player of the Week

Acadia linebacker Tom Labenski is the Atlantic University Sport Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending September 26th, 2010. Labenski, a fourth year student-athlete from Oakville, ON, had an outstanding game this past weekend as the Axemen improved to 2-1 with a 24-11 win over the StFX X-Men in Wolfville, NS. Tom, who participated in the 2010 CIS East-West Bowl, registered a game-high 9.5 tackles, including two sacks and three tackles for losses of 17 yards. He also broke up a pass in the victory. Labenski currently ranks fourth in AUS tackles with 7.7 per game and is tied for third in AUS sacks.


Special Teams Player of the Week
John Szilagyi
Mount Allison University
6’1″, 185 lbs.
Winnipeg, MB

For the second time this season, Mount Allison punter and place kicker John Szilagyi has been named the Atlantic University Sport Special Teams Player of the Week. Szilagyi, a first-year player from Winnipeg, MB, connected on 4-of-5 field goals and added a convert this past weekend in Moncton, NB, to account for 13 of the Mounties’ 23 points in a 23-21 victory over the Saint Mary’s Huskies. John also averaged 37.8 yards on eight punts and 53 yards on one kickoff. Szilagyi currently leads the Atlantic conference in scoring with 34 points and field goals made (10-of-13).
