GRENON, CONN AND GAGNÉ NAMED PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Quarterback Tristan Grenon of the Laval University Rouge et Or, linebacker Justin Conn of the Bishop’s Gaiters and kick returner Raphaël Gagné of the University of Sherbrooke Vert & Or, have been selected as the Quebec University Football League’s (QUFL) players of the week for the period ending October 3.

Highlights : Laval second string quarterback Tristan Grenon completed 24 of the 36 passes he attempted, throwing for 272 yards and three touchdowns as the top ranked Rouge et Or cruised to a 46-10 win over the Concordia Stingers on Sunday. The second year business administration student who was forced into action for the second consecutive week as starting pivot Bruno Prud’homme sat out with a concussion, is making the most of his time as a starter, leading the Quebec University Football League (QUFL) in touchdowns passes with 6 and in terms of completion percentage, having connected on 66.7-percent of passes attempted (60-for-90).

Highlights : Justin Conn led the Gaiters’ defence in their 39-21 upset of the No. 3-ranked Montreal Carabins on Sunday afternoon. The fifth-year linebacker made an interception on Montreal’s second drive of the game that set up the Gaiters’ first touchdown, allowing Bishop’s to take a 7-0 lead. The New Maryland, N.B. native, who was Montreal’s sixth-round choice (47th overall) in the 2010 CFL Draft, finished with four tackles, one sack and two tackles for loss, all in the fourth quarter, as the Gaiters held off Montreal’s comeback attempt. His sack midway through the fourth quarter pushed the Carabins out of field goal range and he stuffed Rotrand Sené for a two-yard loss on the Carabins’ final drive, after Montreal had recovered a short kickoff.

Highlights : Sherbrooke Vert & Or return specialist Raphaël Gagné is the QUFL special teams player of the week for his performance against the McGill Redmen on Saturday. The first year administration major racked up 139 yards on four punt returns including a game changing 83-yarder for a touchdown with just eight seconds remaining in the opening half as the U de S topped the Redmen 34-8. It was the second time this season that Gagné has returned a punt for a score. He added another 36 yards on a pair of kickoff returns in the match. Gagné leads the CIS in punt return yardage, with 487-yards in five games.
