Gryphons announce new additions to coaching staff

The Guelph Gryphon football program is pleased to announce the addition of four coaches to the staff for the upcoming 2010 season.

Anthony Maggiacomo will serve as the new linebackers coach, Carl Tolmie will coach the offensive line while Chris Decker has switched to the special forces coach. Meanwhile, Bill Brown has been named as the defensive back coach and the director of recruiting and football development.

We’re pleased to welcome these coaches to the Gryphon staff,” said University of Guelph head football coach Stu Lang. “With the addition of these four coaches I believe we have one of the strongest football coaching staffs in Canada. All of our coaches are committed to making every student-athlete on our team a success both on and off the field.”

Chris Decker returns to the Gryphon coaching staff for this season, but this time will assume a new role as the special forces coach. Decker was a linebacker coach last season with the program and assisted with special teams. His experience on the field, with film and in the classroom during the 2009 season made him one of the best candidates for the position. He played for the Gryphons from 2004-2007 and was named the team’s defensive player of the year in 2006 and 2007. After graduating from Guelph, he was selected for a coaching mentor program with the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the CFL for the 2008 season. This program was started to give top young Canadian coaching candidates valuable experience at the professional level. This past summer, he extended his coaching and playing career in Austria.

Anthony Maggiacomo joins the Gryphons after serving as the defensive assistant and linebacker coach for the Cambridge Lions Jr team in the Ontario Varsity Football League ( OVFL) this past season. In 2008 and 2009 he was the assistant strength and conditioning coach with the Laurier Golden Hawks. In 2009 he also served as the assistant defensive coordinator and linebacker coach at Jacob Hespeler high school in Cambridge, Ont. where he also attended. As a player, he was a linebacker with the Golden Hawks from 2003-2007. He was a member of the 2004 Yates Cup and 2005 Yates Cup and Vanier Cup championship teams. In 2007 he was a first team OUA all-star, second team CIS all-Canadian and was named the OUA defensive player of the year. Following university he played professional football for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2008) and then the Montreal Alouettes where he won a Grey Cup Championship title in 2009.

Carl Tolmie joins the Gryphons as the new offensive line coach. He has experience as the offensive line coach for the Ottawa Junior Riders, the University of Montreal and the University of Sherbrooke. He brings an unbridled enthusiasm and energy to the offensive line unit and has a tremendous passion for coaching. He attends the COOL (Coaches of Offensive Line) clinic annually and trains many coaches throughout the province through his ‘Building Blocks’ clinics. Tolmie has also served as a guest coach for CFL teams in Winnipeg, Calgary and Ottawa. His experience coaching in the QUFL (Quebec University Football League) and in the Canadian Junior Football league (CJFL) will prove invaluable to the Gryphons offence this season.

Bill Brown returns for his tenth season as a member of the Gryphons coaching staff. This season he will assume a new role as the defensive back coach and the director of recruiting and football development. For the last two seasons he served as the team’s defensive coordinator. On top of his coaching career with the Gryphons he has coached for the Guelph Bears in the OVFL for four years. His latest season was in 2007 as the head coach. He has been the defensive coordinator for Bishop MacDonell high school in 2004 and St. James high school in 2005. As a player for the Gryphons from 1994-1998, Bill was named 1994 Gryphon rookie of the year, 1996 OUAA all-star, was a member of the 1996 Yates Cup Championship team and 1998 Gryphon defensive player of the year.
