Gryphons Face Lions This Saturday

GUELPH, Ont. – This Saturday afternoon the Guelph Gryphon football team will return home to host the visiting York Lions at Alumni Stadium, and with both teams sitting at 1-5, a shot at the playoffs might be on the line.

Guelph is coming off a strong showing where they took #2 Western right to the final minute before ultimately falling 33-29. York, on the other hand, is coming off one of its worst defeats at the hands of the Ottawa GeeGees. Surely both these teams would love to get back in the win column and finish their season strong.

What To Look For: Gryphon’s Offense

Rookie QB Jazz Lindsey had a breakout performance in just his second start against the Mustangs and will be looking to keep that momentum going heading into Saturday’s matchup. Lindsey completed 24-38 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns, and almost led the Gryphons to victory before being picked off in the end zone in the final minute.

What To Look For: Gryphon’s Defence

Guelph’s defence has slowed down recently, as they have failed to make an interception in two straight games. It’s possible the grind of a long year has caught up with the Gryphon’s defence with the amount of time they’ve been on the field. A strong pass rush will be necessary against Lions QB Dimitar Sevdin, whose only been taken down three times all season. Now that the offense has started to click, expect the defence to return home inspired and ready to take down the Lions.

What To Look For: Lions Offense

The Lions are one of the lowest scoring teams in the CIS, putting up just over 12 points a game so far this season. Last week against the GeeGees, the Lions took to the air in an attempt to keep the score close, barely opting to use the ground game. If the Gryphon’s can make this a high scoring affair, the depth of talented playmakers in the Guelph secondary could give the Lions a world of trouble in their passing game.

What To Look For: Lions Defence

York ranks as the #1 team in terms of total tackles so far this season, which shows how much time their defence is on the field. Ottawa was able to control the clock against the Lions and keep their defence on the field, wearing them down and putting up nearly 700 total yards. The Lions have struggled in keeping opposing offenses off the scoreboard, so expect the Gryphon’s to make this game a shootout and simply outscore the Lions. If they can do that, the Gryphon defence should continue to hold strong and keep the Lions at bay.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
