Gryphons ready for Saturday night light’s in Windsor with new starting 1st year QB

This Saturday (Oct. 1) night the Gryphon’s football squad hits the road to take on the Windsor Lancers at Alumni Field in Windsor for a 7:00PM kick-off. Guelph, coming into the game with a 1-3 record, looks to take down the powerful Lancers, who enter the game at 3-1.

Guelph looks to put an end to their two game slide, and with a win could find themselves right back in the playoff race. Windsor, sitting in a three-way tie for second in the standings, will be looking to make an impact at home and prove that they belong at the top of the OUA.

With only a single win behind the team this season, the Gryphons are surprised with their current status.

β€œWe were hoping to be better at this point in the season,” said Stu Lang, Gryphon football head coach. β€œI think our defence is playing well and unfortunately just got worn out in the later stages of our last game because our offence couldn’t put together any really long series to give them a rest.”

In an effort to mix things up the Gryphons are expected to start first-year quarterback Jazz Lindsey (Markham, Ont.) on Saturday.

β€œWe have confidence in all three quarterbacks but we felt at this stage we needed to try something new. Jazz will be starting, he is a rookie and doesn’t know the offence as well, but he has some special abilities we think we can showcase and inspire the offence to put some more points on the board than we’ve been doing this season.”

What To Look For: Gryphon Offence

With the Gryphons starting first year piviot, Jazz Lindsey, expect the Gryphons to mix-up their offence. Despite the change at the quarterback position, if the Gryphons can get the ball to their veteran receivers, it should open the ground game up for the Gryphons. Guelph was only able to muster 37 yards rushing last game, albeit against a tough McMaster defence. Expect better numbers overall against the Lancer defence.

What To Look For: Gryphon Defence

Each and every game, Guelph’s defence has come to play and has kept them in most games. Guelph continues to be one of the strongest defensive teams in the OUA, and continue to lead the league in interceptions with 10, four of those picks coming from defensive back Bryan Dunjko (Aurora, Ont.). They’ll have a tough time against a strong Windsor offense that averages 481 yards per game, good for third best in the OUA.

What To Look For: Lancers Offence

Windsor brings a balanced attack on offence, which is geared to keeping defences guessing. Quarterback Austin Kennedy has had a solid season up to this point, connecting on 65% of his passes. The Lancers will have trouble throwing against the Guelph secondary, but should see some success running the ball, something the Guelph defence will surely make note of.

What To Look For: Lancers Defence

The Lancer defence is built around stopping the run, something they did very well against Waterloo, holding them to only 16 yards rushing on 22 attempts. Expect Guelph to come out throwing, considering Windsor has only three defensive interceptions so far this season. Windsor comes in as the most penalized team in the OUA, so mental mistakes could be a deciding factor in this matchup.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
