Gryphons spoil Warrior home opening with big win (stats)

WATERLOO, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons spoiled the Waterloo Warriors home opener handing the black and gold a 65-13 loss at Warrior Field on Saturday, September 10. A capacity crowd was on hand to watch the Gryphons and Warriors battle as part of the annual Black and Gold game and re-opening of Warrior Field.

Following a week one performance of eight points, the Gryphons offence came out firing taking advantage of the young Warriors defence and putting up at least 10 points per quarter.

Standout receiver Jedd Gardner (Niagara Falls, Ont.) opened the scoring for Guelph at 4:30 of the first quarter on a determined 38 yard run. Waterloo would get on the board two minutes later on a lengthy punt from kicker Alex Cowle (Napanee, Ont.) for a single point making the score 7-1 for Guelph.

Following several defensive stops by Waterloo, the flood gates opened for the Gryphons offence with Carl Trivieri (Toronto, Ont.) catching an 18 yard pass by quarterback Chris Rossetti (Mississauga, Ont.) at the 12:42 minute mark to give the Gryphons a 14-1 lead heading into the second quarter.

Following a 16 yard field goal by kicker Daniel Ferraro (Mississauga, Ont.), Trivieri once again found the end zone on a 20 yard pass by Rossetti to give the visiting squad a commanding 24-1 lead.

Before the half was over Guelph would connect for the longest passing touchdown of the game with Dillon Dimitroff (Burlington, Ont.) putting the Gryphons up 31-1 on a 43 yard reception followed by an eight yard touchdown run by Rob Farquharson (Niagara Falls, Ont.) to send Guelph to the locker room up 38-1.

The third quarter saw much of the same with Guelph controlling possession and wasting little time going up 45-1 on a 33 yard pass by second string quarterback Lucas Nangle (London, Ont.) to fourth year receiver Saxon Lindsey (Markham, Ont.). Following a Gryphon field goal, Waterloo would notch their first major of the game as Warrior quarterback Evan Martin (Kitchener, Ont.) would connect with Luke Balch (London, Ont.) on third down. A missed two point conversion left Guelph in the lead 48-7.

Any hope of a comeback would be denied by Guelph’s punt returner Trivieri who dazzled the fans with the play of the game running the ball back 78 yards for his third major of the game.

Up 55-7 going into the fourth quarter, Guelph’s receiver Kevin Campbell (Pickering, Ont.) would add to the lead on a 16 yard run to put the Gryphons up 62-7. Guelph would add one more field goal before Waterloo would score their second touchdown of the game late in the fourth as Christian Lewis corralled his first touchdown as a Warrior making the final 65-13 for Guelph.

Next up for the Warriors (0-2) is a meeting with the York Lions (0-2) at Warrior Field on Saturday, September 17 with kickoff set for 1:00pm while the Guelph Gryphons (1-1) travel to Toronto to battle the Varsity Blues (1-1) at 1:00pm.

Quarterback Chris Rossetti (Mississauga, Ont.) threw four touchdowns to lead the Guelph Gryphons (1-1) to a 65-13 win over the Waterloo Warriors (0-2) Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field in front of a capacity crowd in the annual Black and Gold game and re-opening of Warrior Field.

Following last week’s opening season loss to Ottawa and scoring only eight points, the Gryphon offence came out firing and took advantage of the young Warrior defence, putting up at least 10 points per quarter and exploded in the second quarter for 24 points.

β€œToday was a very significant game for us and a huge confidence builder,” said University of Guelph head football coach Stu Lang. β€œThis was a confidence builder for the team and for a number of individuals on the team. After our loss to Ottawa we needed to prove to ourselves that we can successfully run and pass the ball and score points.”

Chris Rossetti (Mississauga, Ont.) mixed up the offence enough to keep the Warrior defence guessing as the Gryphons racked up 582 total yards.

β€œIt was game that we should have won. It’s tough on Waterloo in a rebuilding year but we just needed to remind ourselves that we are a good team and that we play to score.”

Rossetti completed 11-of-16 passes for 241 yards and four touchdowns and also rushed five times for 21 yards.

Dillon Dimitroff (Burlington, Ont.) was his top receiver, catching four times for 163 yards and one touchdown. Carl Trivieri (Toronto) also had a standout performance for the Gryphons, catching four balls for 72 yards including two touchdowns in the air and returning a punt 78-yards for a touchdown.

Jake Reinhart (Guelph, Ont.) led the Guelph defence with two solo tackles, seven assisted tackles and one sack while Bryan Dunjko finished with two solo tackles and tallied two interceptions on the day. Mike Millar and rookie Ian Hutchinson also picked up interceptions.

Rookie kicker Daniel Ferraro (Mississauga, Ont.) kicked his first OUA field goal and finished with three field goals on the game.
