Harris era begins with Spring Camp

CALGARY – A new head coach, new systems, new personnel, and new recruits – they all combine for the University of Calgary’s first on-field football sessions since November when Spring Camp gets underway Wednesday.

Head coach Wayne Harris, Jr. along with newly-hired Ryan Sheahan, assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, and the rest of the coaching staff will put approximately 110 returning and incoming players through their paces over the five-day event at McMahon Stadium. The first practice gets underway Wednesday at 5:45 p.m., with Thursday and Friday following the same schedule. Saturday will see a matinee practice from 2-4 p.m., while Sunday’s Red-White Scrimmage will kick off at 2:30 p.m.

“The players have trained extremely hard this winter and are excited to get back on the field,” said Harris. “Spring Camp gives us the opportunity to evaluate our progress and kick-off our summer training program leading into the season. I look forward to seeing our players and coaches in action.”

A total of nine Dinos were named All-Canadians in 2014, led by Hec Crighton Trophy-winning quarterbackAndrew Buckley – who is up for the BLG Award as the CIS athlete of the year next Monday.

Following Spring Camp, the Dinos will turn their attention to the CFL Draft, scheduled for Tuesday, May 12. Three players – offensive linemen Sukh Chungh (6) and Sean McEwen (10) along with receiver Jake Harty (18) – were among the CFL’s top 20 prospects identified in the final rankings last week.

Fall training camp will open in August, with the 2015 Canada West season set to begin with KICKOFF against the UBC Thunderbirds Friday, Sept. 4 at McMahon Stadium.
