Under the supervision of the Director of Athletics & Recreation, the Head Coach – Football develops and coordinates the interuniversity Men’s Football program in a manner designed to foster and enhance the positive moral, academic and athletic growth of the athletes.Β  The Head Coach – Football promotes the program in a manner consistent with the goals and objectives of the University.Β  The Head Coach – Football oversees the Junior Huskies youth programs and spring leagues and remains up to date with and applies current AUS, CIS rules and eligibility policies. The Head Coach – Football also creates a following of loyal supporters and partners through community outreach and alumni relations who may help financially with the men’s football program. These responsibilities are required in organizing a competitive and successful team while promoting academic success for student-athletics.

Duties as the Head Coach, Football include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervising equipment managers, coordinators and assistant coaches; assigning tasks and responsibilities.
  • Monitoring performance and providing day-to-day and periodic formal performance feedback.
  • Providing counselling, training and development opportunities to enhance performance levels & team participation.
  • Selecting and recommending direct reports and confirming selection and transfer of indirect reports.
  • Resolving employee concerns either directly or through established grievance/complaint procedures.
  • Initiating disciplinary action along with recommending and justifying discharge where warranted.
  • Creating and maintaining recruitment strategies to attract the best student-athletes to the University.
  • Scouting athletes by watching live games, videos, practices, and attending development camps.
  • Creating and maintaining a professional network within the sport.
  • Recruiting athletes through direct and indirect contact.
  • Establishing and maintaining a positive image of SMU football through provincial team involvement, hosting and speaking at clinics, and involvement with local high school programs.
  • In consultation with the Director, coordinating and monitoring the AFA awards within budget and CIS rules.
  • Organizing and conducting practices and preparing the team for competitions.
  • Booking game and practice facilities and coordinating game day operations with appropriate staff members.
  • Designing & implementing training strategies & weekly game plans by identifying the strategies of opposing teams.
  • Working with individual players needing extra training.
  • Preparing and analyzing videos of practices and games.
  • Remaining up to date with and applies current AUAA/CIAU rules and eligibility policies.
  • Counselling and advising athletes on academic, athletic, career, financial and personal matters.
  • Initiating and implementing promotional activities to establish and maintain a positive public image and good will toward Saint Mary’s University.
  • Preparing media information; conducting media interviews; and delivering guest lectures at clinics and camps.
  • Creating a following of loyal supporters and partners to help financially with the men’s football program.
  • Working collaboratively with sales and marketing within the Department of Athletics & Recreation to maximize revenues of men’s football while maintaining allocated operating budget.
  • Scheduling AUS, exhibition play and practices.
  • Making travel and accommodation arrangements; ordering and maintaining inventory of equipment.
  • Developing, implementing and monitoring operating budget.
  • Participating and contributing significantly to department fundraising initiatives.
  • Providing information for promotional materials such as brochures, flyers, advertisements and supervising distribution of such information.
  • Organizing, promoting and conducting Junior Huskies Camps in order to drive revenue for the overall Department of Athletics & Recreation.
  • Planning schedules & curriculum and overseeing day-to-day camp operations; dealing with parent concerns; and processing payroll.
  • Preparing budget for approval; approving program expenditures; and identifying and correcting budget variances.
  • Hiring, training, instructing and supervising Junior Huskies Camp counsellors and supervising campers.
  • Coordinating and conducting camp-wide and individual coaching sessions.

To be the successful Head Coach, Football you will possess an Undergraduate degree, with current knowledge of coaching techniques, methodologies and strategies and a minimum five (5) years related experience. You further possess a strong leadership ability and demonstrated fundraising experience.
