High-flying LB now running with SMU Huskies

The Huskies bring in an out-of-province commit to their Class of 2017.

Chase Avery, a linebacker from Bev Facey Community High, is ready to buy into the system of the Saint Mary’s University Huskies.

“After hearing the coaches’ plan and what they’ve done to change the program and turn it around and after I talked to a few players, I knew the coaches weren’t just talk and they were very educated about the sport,” Avery said.

“I think the coaches have all played a very high level of ball and (they) know what they need to do and what they need to run a winning team. They have a plan and they execute it,” he added.

Avery hails from Sherwood Park, Alberta, outside Edmonton. He has played with the Sherwood Park Sabrecats (Capital District Minor Football Association), the Sherwood Park Rams (CDMFA) and the Bev Facey Falcons (Metro Edmonton High School League). In his eight years, the 5’10, 195lbs football player has quite a list of accolades. In his three high school seasons, he has won a conference championship and has been a provincial medalist.

In 2012, he was his team’s linebacker MVP and a year later, he was the defensive MVP. In 2014, he was rookie of the year on his senior team. The following season, he was recognized as the linebacker MVP. This past season, he won the “Fighting Heart” award. He has also etched his name into the Falcon’s history books by breaking the team’s all-time career tackle record.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
