Holland Hurricanes Football Club and UNB Saint John Seawolves compete for Chowder Cup

When the Hurricanes and the UNB Saint John Seawolves meet for their first game of the season, there will be more than just bragging rights on the line. The teams will go head to head for the newly-established Chowder Cup trophy.

The game on Saturday, which starts at 3 p.m. on McAdam Field at UPEI, kicks off the 2011 season for the Hurricanes, who went 2-5 in their inaugural year. The defending league champion UNB Saint John Seawolves, who went undefeated last year, are fresh from a 14-13 overtime victory over Husson University Junior Varsity last Saturday in Bangor, Maine.

“We are excited to be hosting the Seawolves to start off our year, and to be playing for the Chowder Cup provides additional incentive for both teams,” said Michael O’Grady, president of the Hurricanes Football Club.

Barry Ogden, President of the UNB Saint John Seawolves, said the team is looking forward to Saturday’s game.

“The UNB Saint John Seawolves are proud to be playing in the Chowder Cup,” he said. “There is a strong bond between our two teams and community, from Stompin’ Tom Connors, the Marco Polo, and fish and potatoes, to the province with the only land link to PEI. The Seawolves organization has been very impressed with the high level of organization and enthusiasm the Holland College Hurricanes have shown.”

In addition to Saturday’s Chowder Cup, the Hurricanes and the UNB Saint John Seawolves will meet twice during the AFL season.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
