Howard leads Rams to GHAC victory

MM Robinson defeats Cardinal Newman, head to Metro Bowl semi-finals

The MM Robinson Rams defeated Hamiltonā€™s Cardinal Newman Cardinals 25 to 21 winning the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Council (GHAC) game, a quarter-final for the Golden Horseshoe Metro Bowl Friday afternoon.

The Rams received the ball but were unable to score on their opening drive. The Cardinalsā€™ Eric Mezzilira scored on their first drive with a four-yard scramble into the end zone. The RamsĀ  responded later in the quarter with a one-yard touch down run by John Howard.Ā  After this early scoring the defenses stepped up, and the only points scored before the half were on a missed Jordan Camp field goal attempt for the Rams resulting in a rouge.Ā  The score at the half was eight to seven for the Rams.

Early in the second half, the Rams in scoring position,Ā  Camp made a 28-yard field goal. Three minutes later Cardinal QB Jake Marquette found Daniel Peterman for a 27-yard touchdown pass, putting Cardinal Newman up 14 to 11. Howard scored his second major with an eleven yard run five minutes into the fourth quarter, and again with less than three minutes left to seal the deal. The Newman offense mounted a comeback with their last possession but ran out of time. The final score was 25-21 for MM Robinson.

It was an evenly matched game that was very physical. The Rams moved the ball 345 yards compared to Newmanā€™s 300 yards. Both teams earned 18 first downs and both had just over 100 yards on returns.

The Rams will have to refocus quickly to prepare for the Wednesday Metro Bowl semi-final against Westdale Collegiate. Game time is 2:30pm at Ron Joyce Stadium.
